Levels of the Capability Maturity Model
There are five levels defined along the continuum of the CMM and, according to the SEI: “Predictability, effectiveness, and control of an organization’s software processes are believed to improve as the organization moves up these five levels. While not rigorous, the empirical evidence to date supports this belief.”
- Initial (chaotic, ad hoc, individual heroics) – the starting point for use of a new process.
- Managed – the process is managed according to the metrics described in the Defined stage.
- Defined – the process is defined/confirmed as a standard business process, and decomposed to levels 0, 1 and 2 (the latter being Work Instructions).
- Quantitatively managed
- Optimizing – process management includes deliberate process optimization/improvement.

And, I was going to add this little article I wrote in 2008 for the innovation pages about business – and maybe follow some of my own advice in it to help build the America the Beautiful Show project a little better.
Fourteen places to make money –

1. Take the Area Occupational Wages pamphlet or from the Department of Labor online sources (by state) and use is to target potential customers making over $20 – $25 per hour.
2. Using this target audience, introduce products and services directly to them online through the websites, brochures, magazines, distributors and retailers already in place to reach them.
3. Customize products and services specifically to these niche audiences. Coffee cups having sayings, emblems and ideas suited to them are more likely to interest them, etc.
4. Find a target audience in person / on site by finding announcements of events in the area that are drawing them to participate. Using this venue, introduce the business / product / service using this opportunity. T-shirts can be sold appropriate to the audience, so can books and specialties.
5. Tailor whatever the product or service to the specific target audience or use the basis of common ground to interest them. While discussing meetings, coffee will be served and every one there is missing someone or something else.
6. Facilitate cooperation, analysis and brainstorming among participants involved in a common event, association or vocation / hobby / business. This helps create networks of consumers that provide a database of possible sales.
7. Go where money runs like rivers flowing into an event, mall, highly trafficked sports or entertainment venue, trade show or similar to approach participants with availability of some specific need during the show or that will make their life better after the show.
8. Use a theme of commonality, such as an interest – like, camping, love of animals, pets, hobbies, types of cars or activities to customize products and services. Then, target these audiences through events, publications and websites where they are involved or through stores that already attract them.
9. Provide a service needed by everyone at least once a year or better yet, once a month. This is the basis of sales for more items in the marketplace than anything else. People do want funnel cakes when at a craft festival and they will pay for something their children can do while there.
10. Create a convenience that doesn’t exist currently but is much needed. Anything that can save time for a reasonable cost will make people’s lives more organized and do-able. To target this audience, find stress free topics and stress reduction topics and contribute there.
11. Offices and industries are a captive audience with continuing needs, some of which are being served and some which are useful and not being served. This is a good target through online high readership, interactive forums and office product websites where goods are being sold already.
12. The most creative, personable character that touches the common thread of experience with most people can be the basis for entire lines of products, opportunities and uses. However, until this character has an association with people seeing it, getting to know it and kindling a response to it – the character has little value. Target any common-theme areas for application and audience.
13. Style creates sales, money and opportunities. To target a style to a specific audience, find the places where products are already being introduced to these audiences and either use them or by-pass them using off-shoot branches of these arenas. A tv show or sitcom can introduce a product.
14. How to tell everyone at once about a product, service or business? Use television broadcast / cable opportunities through existing shows and audiences, including news, new product shows, talk shows, sitcoms and reality shows. Then, know it has to be in front of those audiences more than once in order to work and be backed up by web access to it and a strong web presence along other avenues to be credible.

From the photos I took yesterday on my walk to the store –
I am amazed that this picture actually worked and then I also took some photos of the empty businesses near where I live (and some other sky pictures too. It was pretty dramatic skies right before sunset yesterday).
There used to be another business right beside it and it is gone too. The barbecue place up the street is also empty after having two or three other owners try to get it going and there are multiple business retail suites sitting empty and unused at every shopping center, not just a few but several in each large strip center that used to be covered in businesses.

1. Read the papers before signing them.
2. Ask the dumb questions that make it obvious you don’t know.
3. Ask the same dumb questions of everybody, especially specialists and attorneys who would know what it actually means, until you understand it.
4. Look it up, but don’t expect that to make any sense of it until you can form the right questions to ask using the right words to convey what you are asking.
5. Expect to communicate poorly until the basic principles start to gel in your mind – but keep trying until you get the communication right.
6. Don’t expect anybody to believe you know anything about anything – it won’t be about that anyway. It will be about someone else proving they know more than you do – so let them.
7. Learning is the one thing that can’t be fudged, it can’t be cooked to appear to be what it isn’t. The skills of learning are yours simply by applying them.
8. If you know a lot about something – remember this: you can’t now, nor ever know everything about it. There will always be more to remember than you have ever thought to ask about it and there will always be more to learn about any one thing than what you’ve ever considered about it.
9. There will always, always, always be times that appear to be complicated which are indeed complicated. It is the magic of being alive as a human being that the capacity exists within each of us to challenge the reality before us and apply ourselves to it despite its complexity and difficulty.
10. Whatever can be learned, can be mastered and there will still be more to know and to learn about it. There will always be ways to apply new ideas and new information and new processes and new paradigms to that mastery.
11. If you ask, the only fool is the one who pretended to know and didn’t – not you or me for accepting the limitations of knowledge and sought to know more.
12. Living is not a game, not a premise easily dismissed and not a practice session for something else. It is lived in the now with all the fullness and depth of the entire universe available. It doesn’t matter what people think about that – living is intrinsically powerful by virtue of itself regardless of anything else. What you do with it is up to you.

About the Oil Crisis – Brainstorming Solutions –

The basic problem I see is this – most of our mechanical power and propulsion systems are based on combustion. This means that we are still harnessing the discovery of fire to translate into our mechanical work mechanisms.
In each translation there is a significant loss of energy and efficiency. With each gear and armature, there is a loss of energy. Rather than amplifying power input, our current systems degrade that input at each juncture of change from source to output.
As the basis for engineering and science, surely there has already been discoveries about natural and cosmic phenomenon beyond creating fire, heat or combustion.
If petroleum is atomized to the nano particle level, isn’t the surface area of combustion increased? Or does something else occur at that point? Do we have to continue living with exotic chemical combinations in our air or can we harness them for transportation fuels?
Could we use reflexive skids under our existing cars rather than tires to decrease the effects of friction and no longer need to push our vehicles against the ground surface? Is there really a need for that many moving parts in vehicles’ mechanical systems? Are we only doing it that way to support businesses that are no longer viable?
Do we require controlled blasts to move pistons as a reaction of combustion (fire) or could a chemical reaction do that? Couldn’t a plasma reaction ionizing the air inside the combustion chamber of existing vehicles move the pistons with less energy and greater efficiency? Wouldn’t that make better sense along with restructuring a certain degree of complexity that has over the years been used “under the hood”?
Even water given a pressurized environment contains enough power to move the mechanical workings of a car or pull a load, such as required by trucks. The idea that we have not progressed beyond the discovery of fire must be wrong with the time, knowledge and money that has already been put into our understandings of physics, etc.
When do we utilize what has been developed, considering the costs associated with keeping the status quo?
If –> two powerful magnets holding in stasis a plasma reaction of carbon nanoparticles, then could an electron swarm be culled from this reaction and for how long with what input?
Why not use hovercraft technology on land for vehicles’ motion?
With as much nitrogen derivative compounds in every city’s air from car and truck emissions, it would seem this is a better fuel source that is available. Under a pressure system, the change of neutrons could occur releasing great quantities of power to harness. Or, using the basis of energy in temperature change, could harnessing of these nitrogen compounds create a fuel source for another kind of kinetic engine?
There are many chemical reactions which yield energy in transmutation. Isn’t there anything that industrial slag from one process which would combine with that of another to produce power by chemical reaction rather than combustion?
We also have methane from landfills that are abundant. Can this be used to fuel existing systems for cars and trucks, as is being done by some industries? Is it really necessary for the habits of filling up the car with gasoline to remain the same for people to feel comfortable?
Would there be anyway to create a distribution network in a timely manner for alternative fuel stations such that there would be convenience to using them? Could these be offered by a retail chain whose locations already exist that is not a gasoline retailer but possibly a discount merchandise retailer instead? There are groceries and discounters that have huge chains nationwide that could simply add an island of alternative fuels in their parking lots, perhaps by subcontracted businesses. Would they do that?
In 1992, Popular Mechanics magazine, there is a Nissan vehicle (car) that was announced in full working model that ran on 100% electricity. It is now 2008. Every car manufacturer has working models that have been shown at one time or another for fully electric cars, light trucks and other mechanical marvels, including lawn mowers, power tools, heavy load movers and others. Why aren’t these available to the market considering there has been more than enough time to do all the tests on them to date?
What conflict of interest is placing our car and truck manufacturers on the list of beneficiaries to the petroleum industry’s continued profitability extreme? The extreme has been a complete monopoly on the market and the compliance in the vehicle manufacturing concerns to keep the current petroleum based systems in place indicates some deep pocket advantage to them. This has kept the status quo in place despite every evidence of its detriment across several areas of impact and concern.
There are laws of physics which have some interesting possibilities for motion and propulsion. Some of these have been pursued by scientists and engineers. Some have been designed into systems already but they are not on the market. It appears that the entrenched powers in the marketplace have been undermining the introduction of these new technologies and uses of the new understandings of physics for market-ready products, particularly in transportation uses.
Unless pollution that is currently prevalent everywhere is somehow harnessed and utilized to power modern living, there will be no turning back from the damage that has already occurred. The time has passed already for assessing, studying, testing, figuring, analyzing and in fact, all that has been done at this point. Possibilities exist that simply need to be put into play now.

Resourcing – II – 2008 – USA

1. What do you do if the only resource you need is money?
Make a list of jobs / work / businesses you can do with only a cellphone – (no car – just a cellphone).
Make a list of jobs / work / businesses / sales you can make with only a computer (no car – no phone – just a computer).
Make a list of the nearest holidays, festivals, conventions, gatherings, bike races, themed events, car rallies, motorcycle runs, races, news events and fund-raisers that are already scheduled to happen.
Make a list of businesses / services you can offer that require no money to get them started (even if they require some tools you could borrow or buy).
Make a list (from the phone book and from what you know) of associations, clubs, organizations and churches in your nearby areas and what might they need, want or buy?
Make a list of needs in your community that are obvious based on time of year, holidays, activities that are happening now or in the near future, current concerns and needs you know are there.
2. If you only need the resource of money and you’ve made these lists, then what?
Find which ideas make the most money for the time put in them. Put a check mark in the left margin beside them.
Find which ideas can be done starting now with what you’ve got – put a star next to the ones of those that you like the most (even if they have a check mark beside them).
Find which ideas will make money the closest to now – the fastest to return immediate money, (give them another star in the left margin).
Take all entries from the list with a check mark, star, two stars or all of the above and write on another paper. These are worth pursuing & save the rest for another time in folder titled – business ideas.
Choose which ones from this list on a new sheet of paper that you most like or want to do. Either circle them, put a star next to them in the margin or write each on a clean piece of paper, (as a title). Then, write the steps you need to take to do them starting today and go do them. Check prices / costs and correct them, if needed, in order to make the money you need. Remember, desperate for money does not mean – give it away for nearly nothing or in the business model, it will undercut its chances of success for you.
3. You can do this any way you want – but here are some suggestions:
Rather than running out and paying out lots of money that you don’t have – network, ask, approach and be creative. Keep focused on “opportunities” and move on them as you find them.
If you want to shine shoes, paint pictures, do makeovers, mow yards, sell jewelry, sell t-shirts or whatever your service or product is – find a store or vendor that already has the permits and licenses, negotiate to use some of their space and work together.
Or, exchange some of your profits for the space in a corner of their store, their kiosk, their booth, their office or their parking lot / sidewalk. Or, create a special event with them where you can offer your services / products and help to promote their business at the same time.
Art shows and convention vendors can be found online at the website for the show – call them. Maybe they will share their booth for someone to help set-up, break down and watch their space part of the time.
This is not the same as business for a hobby or pastime. These are the “rules” for getting money as a resource in a timely manner. It is an “opportunistic” mindset used in a healthy, profitable way. If you can see how to sell drugs or sex or porn, then you can also sell just about anything legal with the same skills and mindset. The opportunities to meet the needs around you and serve those needs to make a profit is the focus to keep in mind. When these occur, grab them, move with them and price to profit immediately, fairly and positively. This is the basis of acquiring money as a resource anytime, anyplace, anywhere right now.

Subconsciously Absorbing Materials & Cross-Referencing – Part II

1. Human beings are goal-driven organisms.
2. By choice of will the subconscious can be directed.
3. Using self-hypnosis of relaxation / meditation techniques and counting down / breathing exercises the will can be activated to direct subconscious goals.
4. Goals must be stated as positives, rather than using the words “not”, “never” or “don’t” in the statements.
5. The human subconscious is already proven to retain each and every, any and all facts, elements, observations, thoughts, sounds & experiences from its birth into the world throughout its lifetime inclusively.
6. The subconscious is not known to make judgements of value or priority on information – all is stored.
7. To cross-reference each and every item in the subconscious as it fits to each and every other item in the internal and external world is requested of the self during meditative self-hypnosis techniques.
8. I added (for myself) – “give me literacy, knowledge and understanding (immediately or sooner) when I want it.”
9. Also, I requested that each and every, any and all elements in the future be cross-referenced to every other thing automatically by the subconscious.
10. I re-iterated by intention and will both during self-hypnosis and throughout the day, “this is what I want, for everything to be cross-referenced to every other thing and available to me the moment I want it.”
11. Using games of recall (taught to me by my parents as a preschool child and that I found in books or made up over the years), I practice recall.
12. For recall to be fluid, automatic and fully integrated, there must be belief that it is possible, goals requesting the information, willingness to accept, honor & pursue what the subconscious offers when asked.
For this entire process to work, it hinges on the way information is treated when recalled & this includes creative, otherwise unrealized applications, solutions, ideas & groupings of elements brought to mind from the subconscious. Demean the information as not fitting the request – the process is thwarted and may not produce results.
Honor the self and subconscious in the process by writing down, checking, going to confirm and physically looking up what the subconscious has offered and the process produces results better each time (and faster). Inclusively accepting all results as “part of” in some way without casting aside any of it establishes a fact that the efforts made have value and are desirable.
Critically analyze the information and its links to other items brought out by the subconscious rather than criticizing or excluding those cross-references and sources. Then, the process is treated respectfully and produces more, better and faster.

Back when I was around 11 and 12 years old, I was studying a book called, “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. As part of a class at LA Baptist High School when I started 7th grade, I was required to read two books about the same time that I was still studying this, called “The Greek Way” and “The Roman Way” by Edith Hamilton. They were talking about the demise and the contributing factors in that demise of those two societies historically as “Atlas Shrugged” described much of what could happen if those who could didn’t or weren’t allowed to contribute when it mattered.
Just for the record, I had already been working on applying the principles of two other books I had been studying for awhile. One was “Psychocybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz and the other was by Norman Vincent Peale about positive thinking, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” along with other positive thinking and can-do thinking books by Dr. Robert Shuller of Garden Grove Church.
As much as all of my family is and was from the South ( in the United States) and in spite of my starting elementary grade school in Georgia, we were in California off and on through my elementary school years, then stayed in California from about my sixth grade year through high school. At 7th grade, I started attending a college prep school (at that time) called LA Baptist High School in Sepulveda, California in the San Fernando Valley. It was before this and during this time, that I was studying “Psychocybernetics” and “Atlas Shrugged” on my own to apply them to my daily living and was introduced to these other books.
To say they influenced me would be misleading. Unfortunately, I had already traveled with my family across this country a couple or three times and had noticed huge and alarming disparities in a number of key areas but I didn’t understand why they were so.
I was inclined to look for disparities because in my years of trying to learn and understand Daddy’s college books on thermodynamics and in many talks with him, I knew – “disparity in a system = volatility and weakness in the system or indicates unknown variables & factors unaccounted for otherwise (in equations & theories).” – quote mine.
Social, political and knowledge-based disparities are the same way. And, then I read those books. “Atlas Shrugged” told me possible whys. Norman Vincent Peale books in their prologues and explanation of our times explained where people’s mindset stayed most of the time. “The Roman Way” and “The Greek Way” fully fleshed out historical references that expressed where our society stood at that time and its possible future progressions, without change occurring before unfolding (possibly in my lifetime or that of my children, if I decided to have any.)
Then, I had an idea that if I and others like me simply changed as part of our society’s members, then the unfolding as it happened in the Great Societies that have fallen before ours ever existed, could be altered. It would be (by nature) altered by the fact that some would exist in it that could affect change as needed in small ripples of difference here and there. So, I set about to change me from inside out and by sharing what I learned with others around me as I moved forward in my life.
To do this, I used the “Psychocybernetics” materials to do several things and the “Power of Positive Thinking” to do some things for the creation of new habits of thought. These were added to what I already had inside which was a lot of despair and futility about a whole lots of things that I already had realized.
Yet, still I wanted what I had asked God to give me when I was five years old and every prayer thereafter – “for me to have – Wisdom”. I thought it was really, really valuable and important. Now, I wish never to have asked for that but during all of my years growing up I believed that “challenges” and to “thrive and succeed through challenges” were something magic and powerful which would make me a much better person and more capable to do more things in my life.
As I approached making changes in myself using the techniques and knowledge from these books, the goals had to be created and they were these:
First, I knew that, “I need to know everything I know, have read, have learned, have studied, have seen, have heard, have experienced, have thought, have created, have figured out, have analyzed and have cross-checked and/or cross-referenced – when I need it available to me.”
Second, I knew that, “I needed all new information of any and of all kinds to be efficiently and automatically fit and referenced to everything I already knew.”
Third, I knew that, “ways and methods to do this already existed that I only needed to work on applying these to myself.”
Fourth, I knew that, “I’m inherently lazy and good for nothing by human nature which would make this difficult to do over any appreciable period of time.”
Lastly, I knew that, “I wanted to do it, that it was worth it, the reasons for it were right, my motives would always be questionable (as a human being) and that my spirit / my soul was and is powerful enough to do it, regardless of any other thing, event, situation, person or stumbling blocks.”
So, I set the work of the “Psychocybernetics” book into action by self-hypnosis and by establishing goal-driven positive thinking habits and games of recall.
Internally, I used the “Island In the Sky” from the book, “Psychocybernetics,” and “The Power of Positive Thinking” to create a place for safety and meditation as well as a place to do work learning, inventing, playing music, resting, writing, creating – inside my mind and psyche. I worked over each element of it with intention and purpose, using self-hypnosis to establish it and to strengthen its mental imagery. Then, I purposefully created a core and other spaces – gardens, waterfalls, gentle streams, ocean and places with its scenes to walk there, forests, meadows and a mountain where I could interact with God, although He is everywhere in my eternal worlds inside that I created. There are also places I like that are there including a rock house near a small stream where I can rest and heal, a place in the forest with beautiful soft mosses to lie on next to a sparkling creek and several other places to swim, ride horses, rest, sleep, fly, play, walk on the beach – all in my mind’s special island.
Then, I asked myself through the self-hypnosis night after night as I lay down to sleep (for over thirty-seven years now) to cross-reference every thing to every other thing by my subconscious & to allow me to have it whenever, however and for whatever reason I ask (immediately or sooner.)
After about two months of doing this before going to sleep each night, I was in meditation one afternoon before practicing the piano, (I think it was a Saturday afternoon alone at my family’s apartment) when I discovered a new place in my internal world. I had not put this place there but it was there and I explored it with amazement. I was twelve years old at the time and had been working with the “Psychocybernetics” book for awhile at that point.
There was this great central core inside my mind and subconscious that I could easily see in its entirety with many floors and rooms holding everything – all things I knew or had worked on or created or learned. I was able to go on any floor, in any room and find things there in progress as I had worked on them at three years old, or five or eight or ten or whenever and it was all there waiting as new parts and elements were being added. Some things I started at six years old had the necessary elements to do a little more work and complete them now at twelve and thirteen years old. And, some of my most recent learnings set on shelves and in other rooms of their own in progress with groups of new information standing in stacks nearby.
Over the years, I had used this process each day never really understanding that it was in any way unusual. It works for me and as things happened in my life, I restored these things at each point that it was necessary to relearn them or re-establish them. As much as I haven’t been tremendous at anything in my lifetime, it may seem unnecessary to psychologists and psychiatrists. Yet, I beg for mercy and freedom to be allowed to be such that I am and no longer be forced to be like any one else. This way works for me.
It is not very impressive to see what is considered normal, especially considering it is now the twenty-first century with a very educated population. But, for some reason – there exists less basic literacy among educated individuals than I would’ve ever expected. My guess is the degree of input far outstrips the skill sets that many have been given. All I know to do now – is to share what I do in the way I know to do it that maybe this will be of some help. It takes work, though, and it rarely seems that people around me are willing to make that effort for themselves.
And, after all these years of doing it this way, I can honestly say – it is worth it. There are many things that do not enhance life, that do not encourage quality of life and that do not get better as they go along. These skills are enhancing of life, they do encourage quality of life and definitely get better, make life better and make more possible in every day than anything else I’ve ever seen or experienced. Now, if I can simply acquire the rights and freedom to be as I am and do what I know how to do – my life will be much better and more comfortable.

2. Analogic Holistic Thinking – Integrated Right / Left Brain Processing –

Logic proceeds step by step in a linear fashion with each step built upon, enhancing &/or expounding upon the steps that came before it.
Analogic processes are non-linear, at least 3-dimensional and proceed cohesively, congruently and concurrently using both logical reasoning from the left-hemisphere and holistic, total and comparative analysis from the right-hemisphere of the brain.
Analogic reasoning and comparative holistic analysis does not require a beginning or starting point as a foundation nor reference. It is goal-oriented and goal-driven. It takes from what is there and works its way outwards in all directions at once until the picture is complete or the process is halted by choice of will.
The left-side of the human brain is more inclined to logic and linear processing. The right-side of the humand brain is more inclined to holistic, non-linear analogic processing. Survival of the species requires all of it to be utilized in an integrated manner and is hard-wired to do so.

I read all kinds of things all the time –
dictionaries, encyclopedias, databases, phone books, information on packages and products at stores along with manufacturers info and addresses if on the packages,
books, how-to and nonfiction – there is really only a select group of fiction books and science fiction books I’ve ever read, newspapers, websites, magazines, and writings in every language found online and from libraries and thrift stores.
I also read cookbooks, recipes, science, math and engineering stuff, chemistry and new technology publications, patents and info as soon as I can find where they’ve put it. I usually know of it before it gets into the marketplace because I scan the original research on which it is based most of the time.
Yes, I’m an info junkie. I love it and this is what I do for fun.

About Comprehension Speed Reading – as I know it.

Originally, when I was very young – under five years old, I learned the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading course from a book because I wanted to read the dictionary, encyclopedias and Daddy’s college books on thermodynamics faster and better without reading every word. I also wanted to be able to do what President Kennedy could do and make books into a feast of all the information that I could learn from them. This was really harder than I thought it would be. In trying to read many things, I always worked too slow because many, many words had to be looked up in the dictionary or encyclopedias elsewhere in order to understand the passages’ meanings.
Then, about the time I was ready to give up, it occurred to me one night playing chess (with myself) so I could win the next day (by the light of a flashlight in my floor when I was supposed to be in bed asleep), that if I could simply remember everything on every page, then eventually I would learn more words and know what it said. So I started doing that. This was when I added two questions to the comprehension of materials list from the Evelyn Wood course materials I had found in that book about it. This way I could take in, even things I did not yet understand and use them when the time came that I could understand them.
So, here is the way I know to do comprehensive or comprehension speed reading:
First, the ground rules are this –
IGNORANCE = “You can’t know what you don’t know.”
It doesn’t mean uneducated or stupid.
And there is always stuff I don’t know. That is a given and an absolute constant, for me.
1. Comprehension Speed Readings – as I know it.
Scan, search & find –
–> What is important here?
–> Why did they write it?
–> What are they trying to prove? (or trying to say?)
–> What is this about (this passage, this book, or chapter?)
–> Where are the important parts the author wants me to remember?
–> What is the mindset, language & mental constructs (framework) of the author? Writer’s mental construct? (path of reasoning)
–> How does this information, this set of facts, this passage fit with the rest of the writing, (work), material, book, other passages and chapters?
–> What other materials has this author written? (and)
–> How does this information fit with those other materials?
–> Where is the information that I’m trying to find in this work, materials, writings, book, database, whatever?
This is what I use from the book I read about Comprehension Speed Reading and its course materials, which I’ve reviewed and re-instituted in my life many times over the years including in grade school, in junior high and during colleges and marriages. Then, later I’ve had to re-learn it several times over because of brain injury, stupid decisions that affected my abilities and even stupider people in my life “helping me out”.
Over the course of years, I’ve probably read millions of books this way and some I’ve committed to greater study. I know a couple things about the process, to say the least.
First, is that if you get the same answer on these three questions or think they are asking the same thing, then you’ve missed something:
–> What are they trying to prove? (or trying to say?)
–> What is this about (this pasage, this book, or chapter?)
–> Where are the important parts the author wants me to remember?
Second, there isn’t one question in the entire list above that yields the same answer when properly done. And, I know this by experience and by double checking with back-up sources and rechecking my work over a period of time. They are all different questions that may seem similar, but they are requesting different approaches of perspective to locate the information in the written materials.
Third, when I do read something this way, it is like a feast, an entertaining game of seeking the hidden treasures of an ebullient and diverse Universe filled with wonders and magic in each word, each passage, each paragraph and each page. It is wondrous and exciting to piece the scan, search and find together into a whole with other elements I know and those I’ve yet to recognize because of my ignorance and ineptitude, which is ever present.
Last, because I was not able to comprehend so much of what I read night after night as a pre-kindergarten person of limited worldly knowledge, I added two parameters to the list of questions above that had come from the initial comprehension skills set that I had found. These I’ve used for over 46 years and they do work: (They are for me, you do what you want.)
–> Author, book, page number, publishing house, year; passage position on page, paperback? hardback?, paragraph #, where I found this book, when I found this book, mental snapshot of each page, passage, book
–> How does this and each and every thing I’ve seen here on this page and in this book, fit with any and all other things I know now and in the future?
This is how I do it and I’ve been doing it this way for over 46 years – so do what you want or try this. I already know how to do it . . .
And, scanning a page does not mean to read every word, the mind and subconscious can process all of it in an instant because as the eyes scan down a page the human being’s build is such that it all goes into the brain and subconscious automagically. Recall is a learned skill and can be easily learned with intention and application. It doesn’t happen cohesively unless the human being directs the will properly to do it.
