Why I know the government of the states and the US are lying to us – whether Party, Legislatures, Legislators, Politicians, Elected US Government Officials, State Government Officials, Republicans, Democrats, Administration Leadership, Agency Appointees, Highly Paid Experts to Cabinet Members and Administration Officials, Highly Paid Experts and Think Tanks to Congressional Members and Caucuses – gee, let me think – what tells me they are lying?

Here is why I know Washington is lying – all of them that we’ve elected to be there making decisions who are at the table –

1.  They didn’t invite us to the table (as in, the American people). Oh no, they invited the insurance companies to be at the table, the automakers CEOs, the banking industry and financial services industry CEOs, pharmaceutical company representatives, oil company lobbyists and big industry consortium representatives to be at the table – not us.)

2.  If they (legislators in Washington) had wanted to pass a health care insurance bill to serve the US population, they could’ve passed one bill to make it illegal for insurance companies to charge 80% more in premiums based on gender and to make it illegal to deny coverage in pre-existing conditions. (Period – nothing else in the bill, no “riders”, no pork, no bullshit.) But they didn’t do that – no, not even after a year of fussing, cussing, discussing and putting off other more important issues to play with this one. Time consuming at best – energy, manpower, effort, money, resource, time and opportunity wasting at worst.

3.  If they were very concerned about the health and well-being of the American people and our quality of life throughout the US, these legislators would’ve stopped a lot of common practices in industries, including the release of toxic chemicals into their surrounding living communities. They would’ve stopped corporations from taking profits made in the US into other countries in order to evade taxes on those profits. They would’ve funded schools first and the re-building of Iraq and Afghanistan second. They would’ve thought more of us than to allow 2600 complaints about cars with defective design elements to be disregarded while causing deaths and injuries to people throughout the US. They would’ve made sure our food supply and food providers were using safe food handling methods and processes across the board whether the manufacturer sneaked the production facilities into another country with lax standards or was sitting here in the US right under their noses breeding salmonella and E.Coli in their production facilities. They would’ve required standards of accounting in our corporations that show everything on the balance sheet, not off-balance hidden accounting for liabilities and they would’ve required that accounting to be prudent and truthful and accurately reflect the true values of those assets and liabilities across the board. They would’ve made financiers who got into trouble dig into their own pockets to get themselves out of it, since that is the same thing required of us. And, they would’ve made sure that nobody, but nobody could buy the goodwill and rubber stamp of the consumer protection agency that was intended to keep us safe from defective products and fraudulent business practices. They didn’t do any of that.

4.  The elected officials in Washington also never, never, never create and apply policy that does what they claimed it would do, either by their intentional design of it which is the antithesis of what they claimed it would be or by virtue of some very basic misunderstanding of applied common sense which escapes their abilities and that of their staff members. Rarely, if ever, are the people of the United States doing anything that they can hear, acknowledge, believe or understand to express the accurate facts about what their policy decisions are destroying, causing, distorting, screwing up, manipulating in negative ways or otherwise resulting in some unnecessary and expensive suffering of some kind. That information is either discounted, discredited or just plainly not heard in Washington no matter how it is done and no matter what measures are used to get the information to them. Then, why do I know they are lying because of this – because I can hear it, I can see it, I know about it, I find it easy to get the information about what their policies have done in real factual reflections of reality. To say they can’t or don’t know or can’t see it or can’t hear it or don’t know about it – has to be either a lie or a lying excuse to do nothing about it.

5. I also know they are lying because the evidence is there in their choices, decisions and actions. One side of their mouths says that the American people are at fault for our financial meltdown, while their backhand is giving away our money to financial institutions and insurance companies like it is a private bank account of free money to cover whatever they want at the moment. The other side of those mouths they have are saying that they want us to innovate and create solutions, while behind their backs they are doing everything possible to hinder the growth and opportunities of entrepreneuship, raising fees and licenses, requiring absurd groups of regulations to be met by small businesses and startups, hindering business grants and loan packages to any but the large business communities and foreign investors, and generally, laying every complexity of intellectual prowess in the path of starting up any business from scratch at all – particularly those that are innovative, new, and competitive to larger industries.

6.  At every turn, they have taken out the checks and balances systems that would ensure our Constitutional rights and guarantees are upheld and that would insure our government doesn’t become the bully state of Orwellian novels which we’ve all seen come to fruition in dictatorships, regimes of absolute tyranny, despotism, aristocratic rule, profit-driven anything goes industrialism, and in Nazi Germany’s Aryan race atrocities. Enough is enough, none of us like the America that has become so close to those things as to mitigate the belief it can be something else. If our government legislators in the states and federal levels cared about that as they say they do, they simply wouldn’t be doing half the things they are doing now and wouldn’t have done 90% of the things they’ve already done. The checks and balances built into our system would be restored to what it was intended in order to accomplish what was intended and offer accountability both individually and collectively from our government officials at every level as well as our agencies. The sovereign immunity clause offering no accountability to government personnel is only appropriate in a tyranny or a dictatorship where there are no rights afforded the citizens – not in a free and democratic society where the government serves the people who are their primary source of power.

7.  One side of our government party system says that small government is desirable and offers a list of benefits they assume come with that territory – and they did their best to accomplish that while they spent the last thirty years in power. They were lying then and they are lying now. Those benefits did not materialize during their reign. And, the word for small government is “king” with the tentacles of an octopus doing all his dirty work. Which, by the way, is exactly what we’ve had in the US for the last thirty years and more so in each and every day throughout that time and still yet from the damages that they caused. States underfunded programs that the Republican administratorship did not want, removed checks and balances because they didn’t want to be accountable for the heinous crimes they committed everywhere they touched, acted like mini-dictatorships at the behest of the federal government lackeys who were serving the interests of industries, big business, and financial conglomerates and genuinely, treated the American people like slaves and undesirables along with establishing a caste system in America where it didn’t belong that is still there to this day. They were lying when they said that is the “American Way.” They were lying when they said it would be the best for America. They were lying when they told us our lives would be better and America would be stronger for it. They were lying when they said they weren’t criminals. They were lying when they said they had the interests of the American people first and foremost on their agenda and on their minds when they did these things and numerous others (both at state levels and federal levels). It was all lies.

8.  I also know they are lying now because they do know better. They have the finest resources available, all of our money, the best in education, the best in the educated minds of our country available to them, the most in money, materials and manhours to get any job done, the best in intellectual and data resources from around the world available to them, the instant information resources from the American people to use as feedback on how their decisions are actually working out – if they choose to see them or hear them, the best opportunities, the most egregious pool of combined resources that belong to us which we’ve made available to them from every hard earned dime and dollar we’ve sent there along with the resources that have been bought with it – as well as having resources available to them on a daily basis that cover every basic need, want, income, delight, luxury, comfort, opportunity and desirable life experience for each of them personally – so they could want for nothing while doing our national and state business. How the hell can you screw it up with that much to work with?

9.  If they wanted to stop waste and fraud, they could stop giving themselves raises. If they wanted to help the budget deficit, they wouldn’t have been charging the American people to cover each of them with 100% fully paid health care coverage when they, if anybody could afford it for themselves. If they wanted to cut government dole, they would’ve only hired lawyers to cover their asses as needed instead of keeping armies of them on the payroll at anywhere from $187,000 – $450,000 a year each as they have done. If they wanted to insure good health in America, they would’ve changed the fuel on school buses from diesel to natural gas and they would’ve made polluting industries stop polluting in the same year they discovered they were doing it, not years into the future after really damaging the health of everybody for hundreds of miles around and many generations thereafter. If they had ever wanted to get legislation passed that was sane, sober and built on some kind of common sense, they would’ve made it illegal to place riders into bills that are in no way related to the material subject of the legislation. At the very least, if they had wanted to do a good job for the American people, they would’ve considered the American people and their interests in light of what they were doing, what they are doing and in light of what choices they are making in order to serve industries that basically have no use for them or us in the overall scheme of their activities.

10. I’m sad to say that I know they are lying because to get to Washington requires being the better liar, the more convincing liar and the best opportunistic lying bastard of the lot or people just don’t get to be elected to go to Washington. Isn’t that the shame of it all, that we, as Americans would choose the best liar of the lot to send into Washington to get our business done than to choose an honest, decent man or woman to serve our interests? And, isn’t it the shame and tragedy of it all, that we let them get away with it without doing a damn thing to change it when we knew what they were doing was wrong and even, as most of us noticed that they weren’t listening to any of us with any real regard – that we let them get away with demonizing us, discrediting us, disregarding us, and generally, dismissing us and our concerns? They lied to us in Washington and in our state legislators and administrations. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party have served the interests of their financial power base while lying to us and using us to further their own personal opportunities and enrichment. The lies have been so pervasive and perverse that the media and the American people alike believe that the truth, the facts and the reality are no more than a matter of opinion and rhetoric as presented by whosever side is representing it and irregardless of those facts. And, isn’t it the greater shame of all of it that the truth, in fact – will be the reality that we all suffer, endure or experience – no matter what perspective we might have about it. Dead is dead and broke is broke and polluted beyond recognition is still polluted beyond recognition – climate change is, because we are experiencing it whether the “rhetoric” told us it didn’t exist or not, and most of us in America are living in a “Depression Economy” whether it is called that or not and no matter what the politicians tell us it is.

(And)

11. Just for good measure, the problem with these lies and probably the reason most religions suggest that it is a bad idea in the first place, is because reality will win out every time. Sooner or later, the propaganda doesn’t work and the deflected, distorted perspectives about reality and about the facts just doesn’t make any difference in changing what is what. It still is whatever it is. And sooner or later, people know about it and they do understand it for what it is, and sooner or later, they do get up and make things different starting right where they are with a power that is unknown and misunderstood by the people who think they hold all the power. One change, changes everything a little bit and another change, changes it even more, and as another person and another person join in making those changes one at a time from where they are with their own personal abilities and perceptions, the whole thing changes even more.

That is the truth. And, that is what made the Boston Tea Party so monumental. The American Revolutionaries said – You will not tax us without representation. You will not steal from us without our voice. You will not indenture us in enslavement to you and you will not indenture our lands and the abilities of our hands. You will not tread on me nor force me to set below your feet for you to stand on nor for your power to rest upon. You will not use me to do your bidding without my will or choice. You will not remove from Us nor from me that which God has given:  life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the right of every man to set his own course and to pursue his own destiny. Try as you might, once a human being knows the taste of freedom, democracy and the rights to life free of the burdenous yoke of tyranny – there is no going back.

Don’t believe for one minute that perception is everything. It just isn’t. The power and truth of our Constitution does not exist in a piece of paper or some flimsy document resting in a museum somewhere. It is in each of us and that is where the true power of our nation’s substance exists and where it will always exist. It is in the power and wonder of freedom that we already know exists and can exist for each of us that can never be taken away no matter the circumstances where we find ourselves. It is the truth of what we see and know in our hearts and minds which is defined by the reality of the facts at hand that can never be distorted by politicians or religious fervor or zealousness of a cause or by the disregard for human life that we have experienced or have seen those in authority exemplify. It is the desire for human dignity and decency and fairness for all without discrimination, contempt or disregard. It is the sword of justice that is not blind, deaf and dumb to the plight of suffering and inhumanity to human lives and human dignity at the hands of others. It is the will of the American people, both individually and collectively that define the power of the government to govern by no more and no less than the consent of the governed. And, it is the true power that comes from the intimate knowledge of the freedom, rights and accountability to those tenets of America’s founding fathers that spilled our blood to protect it and have made us the soldiers of freedom that we are and will always be as American citizens and as citizens of the World.

I’m sure there aren’t any I would watch – but that’s because it would be easier to get out some paint and play with it until it does what I want. Today, there isn’t a dvd that I’ve made about creating ocean waves in watercolor, however try this –

Imagine what the finished piece will be and the moment that you want to capture.

Everywhere there is to be sparkle, foam or waves – don’t put any paint there. Don’t wet the entire watercolor paper, but instead paint with limited areas of wetness across the page from side to side where the foam, sparkle and froth of the waves will not be.

Sounds pretty backwards, doesn’t it? In essence, paint everything in deep hues where the sea is getting deeper away from the viewer until it nears the horizon while leaving the irregular shapes of the wave crests near the viewer and where there are hints of building waves in the middle behind the detailed areas in the foreground.

There is a dry brush technique that works great for sparkle in watercolor – try it first on a separate piece of watercolor paper. Fill the dry paintbrush (stiff bristles have one set of effects, soft bristles have a different look done this way) with paint by gently, lightly dragging it across the top of the paint so it doesn’t fill the bristles completely. Then pull the color across the page drifting it across the surface in one smooth motion. Each swipe across the surface will fill in some of the color under the sparkle. This isn’t white paint in the brush, although you can do that with acrylics or oil paints.

For watercolors, the paper provides the only pure white in the painting, so when the sparkle happens – it is literally the paper showing through the other colors that convey visual information beneath the foam, the spray, the breaking wave froth, and the sparkly little bits that to the viewer seem to be on top of the water. It is easy to fill the brush with several colors of the water and sand to drag across the paper in front of a breaking wave to convey the sparkly foam in the shallows where we would splash and dig our toes into the wet sand.

There is a little shadow beneath each wave’s crashing froth – it can be created with a light wash with only a hint of wet pigment slightly darker than the sea water and depending on the time of day in your painting, the frothiness of the wave can be captured with swirls of very, very thin prussian blue washes blended gently into the areas of white or using lightly wet soft bristles partially filled with a very, very thin wash of payne’s grey. Try it on another piece of paper first.

The clouds and sky will be the same thing – where there are white volumes of clouds must be left unpainted because where the white paper is ever given a tint, it will never be white again. The horizon at certain times of day and in some weather conditions will be almost invisible and lighter than the surrounding upper sky or deep ocean areas. And, at other times it is well-defined and occasionally, deeper in color. What looks right in your mind’s eye? Clouds can be defined from the white surface of the paper using light thin washes of blueish purple, grey, or cobalt that develop the curving forms of shadows beneath their fluffy round forms.

Sunsets and sunrises, afternoons and dusk, all have particular tints to everything. As long as the tints match throughout the painting, it can be believable as if your viewer is standing at that place at that time of day.

The best thing to do is to have some fun with experimenting to find the different effects that can happen, but the basic rule for painting in watercolor is that white areas are left clean and lightly developed, lighter values go on first and each layer of color builds to the darkest which is painted last, rather than first as in acrylics and oil paintings.

Great fun painting – can’t wait to see the results!

Note – this painting above may be watercolor and acrylic or china white watercolor paint riding over the transparent watercolors for the white of the surf and foam in the foreground. I experimented with a lot of different techniques and tried different ways to get the ocean to look the way I remembered it. If it feels like I could splash my feet in it – then, it works as far as I’m concerned.

ADDED – April 2012 –

If you would like to see the things I’ve been doing with my paintings of the ocean – you can find them here at a Zazzle store called, CricketDiane, of course –

This page has the small things with some of the ocean images that I’ve painted and I’ve figured out that if everybody buys one small thing – I will be able to fund starting my business properly – so I’m asking – please do . . .

A little magnet costs about $4 and it would help me to really get started making this into a real business with some appropriate startup funding. Thanks so much for wandering over to my blog and reading the things here and I do appreciate your interest – its very nifty.

Ah, and the actual store is here – but there is a lot of things on it besides ocean waves art and the category “Small Things” has a lot of images that I’ve created and put on products which would be very little to own, less than $10 for any of them. so everybody go buy one – — LOL, but definitely, yes please do.

About CricketDiane –

I’ve been creating nearly every day since I was a kid and that is over 50 years. I’ve created in numerous ways in a range that moves from art to problem-solving to inventing, creating music, sculpting and painting to writing and doing various computer / online based projects.

“It is better to make the effort to move forward and release the flow of ideas to work with them and do things creatively, create things and invent and write and make – I definitely know that by experience.” – cricketdiane, 2018

May To Live In House Made Of Lego Bricks

5:48pm UK, Saturday August 01, 2009

Thousands of people have answered Top Gear presenter James May’s call for help building a house out of Lego bricks.

James May

James May has promised to live in the Lego house

A total of 1,200 were granted free tickets to the vineyard where the two-storey building is being constructed, leaving 1,500 people to be turned away.

“Up until now, the largest thing I’ve ever built with Lego was probably a plane or a battleship, because that was all I could build with the amount I had.”

When the house, filled with Lego furniture, is completed later this month, May has promised to live in it.

[etc.]

More than three million Lego pieces have been delivered for the event, filmed for BBC series James May’s Toy Stories.

Helpers were tasked with making full-sized bricks, each one consisting of 272 Lego pieces.

Builders will then take over in laying the bricks over a six-day construction process.

Construction begins today (Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11 a.m.) at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., day one of a two-day collaborative build of an 8-foot-tall light bulb.

“… the light bulb will be assembled by museum visitors together with the help of LEGO master builders.”

I can’t speak for you but me, I’d love to watch and chat with these LEGO masters.

Above and below,

LEGO Systems and Smithsonian Institution Celebrate Children and Their Big Ideas During National Inventors Month

July 31, 2009 6:58 PM EDT

WASHINGTON, July 31 /PRNewswire/ — In honor of National Inventors’ Month, LEGO Systems Inc. today launches its LEGO(R) CLICK! Awards, an essay contest for children ages 6 to 13. In addition, the Smithsonian Institution’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation and LEGO Systems Inc. invite families to a two-day collaborative build of the world’s largest light bulb – the universal symbol of a big idea – made entirely of LEGO bricks on August 1 and 2 at the National Museum of American History.

The 8-foot-tall light bulb is being assembled by museum visitors with the help of LEGO Master Builders. Additionally, the museum’s hands-on invention space, Spark!Lab, is hosting special interactive, construction play-themed activities for children where they are able to “patent” their creations. The Lemelson Center also collaborated with LEGO Systems to develop invention-themed mini-building activities to be held at 29 LEGO Stores in the United States this weekend. All of the programs reinforce the connection between play and invention explored in the museum’s “Invention at Play” exhibition and celebrate the philosophy that anyone can have a big idea and then can bring it to life.

“Invention is the practical application of creativity, and is a core benefit of our play pattern that we are thrilled to encourage children to explore further,” said Soren Torp Laursen, president, LEGO Systems. “As children have fun building with LEGO bricks, they also engage in a trial and error process that culminates in that moment when everything clicks and their idea becomes real. In so doing, they build the confidence they need to tackle and solve problems and share ideas – qualities they can take with them into adulthood to contribute innovative ideas and solutions at work, at play or in their communities.”

Now in its third year (formerly called the LEGO Creativity Awards), the LEGO CLICK! Awards are designed to inspire and celebrate children’s creativity, innovative thinking and inventive spirit. Five winning essays submitted by children between the ages of 6 and 13 will each be awarded a $5,000 savings bond. To submit for the award, children must answer: “If you could invent anything, what would it be? Describe how to use it. How did you get the idea? What excites you about it?” before November 2, 2009. Entries will be judged by a panel of experts from the Smithsonian Institution and LEGO Systems. More information, applications and complete rules are available at www.LEGOCLICKAwards.com.

LEGO Systems Inc. is the Americas division of the LEGO Group, a privately-held firm based in Billund, Denmark. The LEGO Group is committed to the development of children’s creative and imaginative abilities through high-quality, creatively educational play materials, and its employees are guided by the motto adopted in the 1930s by founder Ole Kirk Christiansen: “Only the best is good enough.” For more information, visit www.LEGO.com.

The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation is dedicated to exploring invention in history and encouraging inventive creativity in young people. The center is supported by The Lemelson Foundation, a private philanthropy established by one of the country’s most prolific inventors, Jerome Lemelson, and his family. The Lemelson Center is located in the National Museum of American History. For more information, visit invention.smithsonian.org.

USPTO TO HOLD 6TH ANNUAL INDEPENDENT INVENTOR’S CONFERENCE
August 3 – 4, 2001; 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The DoubleTree Hotel
300 Army Navy Drive
Arlington, Va.

It all begins with an idea…But where do you go from there?

The Department of Commerce’s U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Office of Independent Inventor Programs (OIIP) will answer this and other questions about patenting inventions and registering trademarks at the 6th Annual Independent Inventor’s Conference, “Celebrating National Inventor’s Month,” August 3 – 4, 2001 in Arlington, Va.

“Throughout history, it has been the independent inventor who was on the cutting edge of new products and technologies. So many great ideas have come from individuals, such as Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who invented the world’s first personal computer working together in a garage,” noted Nicholas Godici, Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Acting Director of the USPTO.

The two-day conference schedule includes workshops on patent and trademark basics, patent and trademark searching techniques, interacting with patent and trademark examiners, and hands on training in USPTO’s electronic patent and trademark application filing systems. In addition to USPTO staff, workshops will be hosted by outstanding experts in product development and marketing, including Ronald Docie, inventor and author; “Furby” toy inventor Richard Levy; J. Mark Davis, inventor and marketer; Joanne Hayes-Rines, editor of the Inventor’s Digest; and Dan Lauer, CEO and founder of a successful toy company.

In honor of National Inventors Month in August, Inventors Digest magazine and partners are sponsoring the 2059 Essay Contest for middle school and high school students. IPWatchdog.com is proud to be one of the sponsors for this exciting essay contest, which asks those in ages 12 to 17 to write a 500 word (or less) essay on a technology, tool, product or service will shape our lives in the year 2059. As the contest information explains: “In 1959, the internal pacemaker, the microchip, the Barbie doll and pantyhose were invented. Each was significant in its own right. But that was so 50 years ago.” Then the assignment asks: “What will the world look like in 2059?” This should be an interesting and educational opportunity for teens, which will allow them to show their imagination and creativity in envisioning the future, and perhaps even spark an interest in Science Fiction as well. As we all know, what is science fiction today becomes science fact tomorrow, as most recently evidenced by scientists transporting matter (a la Star Trek) and feverishly working on cloaking technology (a la Star Trek and Harry Potter). There are also cool prizes, such as a laptop, the winning essay being published in Inventors Digest magazine and more!

The Grand Prize includes:

  • A laptop computer
  • Your essay published in Inventors Digest
  • A year’s subscription to the magazine
  • Possible appearance on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Everyday Edisons

THE U.S. PATENT SYSTEM CELEBRATES 212 YEARS
President George Washington signed first patent act on April 10, 1790On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the bill that laid the foundation of the modern American patent system. This date marks the first time in American history that the law gave inventors rights to their creations.

The 1790 law gave the Patent Board members the power to grant a patent. Their authority was absolute and could not be appealed. The first board members included Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State, who was considered the first administrator of the American patent system and the first patent examiner; Henry Knox, Secretary of War; and Edmund Randolph, Attorney General. The Department of State had the responsibility for administering the patent laws, and fees for a patent were between $4 and $5, with the board deciding on the duration of each patent, not to exceed 14 years.

The Act of April 10, 1790 also defined the subject matter of a U.S. patent as “any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement thereon not before known or used.” Applicants were to provide a patent specification and drawing and, if possible, a model. After examining the application, the board members would issue a patent if they deemed “the invention or discovery sufficiently useful and important.”

On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia, PA, received the first U.S. patent for an improvement in “the making of Pot ash and Pearl ash by a new Apparatus and Process.” President George Washington signed the patent, as did Attorney General Edmund Randolph and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. The original document is still in existence in the collections of the Chicago Historical Society.

Patent for Safety Pin Issued April 10, 1849
A New Yorker invents a handy deviceWalter Hunt, of New York, NY, received patent #6,281 for the safety pin on April 10, 1849. Hunt’s pin was made from one piece of wire, which was coiled into a spring at one end and a separate clasp and point at the other end, allowing the point of the wire to be forced by the spring into the clasp. Walter Hunt was extremely creative, and in 1834 he built America’s first sewing machine, which also used the first eye-pointed needle. Hunt did not patent his invention because he thought it would put hand sewers out of work. Nearly 20 years later, Elias Howe reinvented and patented an eye-pointed needle sewing machine.

WOMEN HOLD PATENTS ON IMPORTANT INVENTIONS

USPTO recognizes inventive women during Women’s History Month In celebration of Women’s History Month, held each year during the month of March, the Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is recognizing some very special women whose inventions have made a great contribution in making this country the most technologically advanced nation in the world.

In 1809, Mary Dixon Kies, a native of Killingly, Conn., received the first U.S. patent awarded to a woman for a process of weaving straw with silk or thread. Unfortunately, all records of this patent were destroyed in the Patent Office fire of 1836. First Lady Dolly Madison praised Kies for helping the hat industry and boosting the economy because, at the time, the U.S. government had put an embargo on all European goods.

Mary Anderson, of Birmingham, Ala., was granted patent no. 743,801 on November 10, 1903, for a window-cleaning device, essentially windshield wipers. Before the manufacture of the Model A, Anderson noticed that streetcar drivers were forced to open their windows in rainy conditions in order to see. The invention could clean snow, rain, or sleet by using a handle inside the car improving vision during inclement weather. By 1916, these wipers were standard equipment in American cars.

Patsy O. Sherman, born in Minneapolis, along with Samuel Smith, received patent no. 3,574,791 on April 13, 1971, for their invention of block and graft copolymers containing water-solvatable polar groups and fluoroaliphatic groups, otherwise known as Scotchgard®. Sherman and Smith were employees at 3M Company when they collaborated on what became the most famous and widely used stain repellent and soil removal product. What prompted this innovative product was an accidental spill of a flurochemical rubber on a tennis shoe. The shoes showed resistance to water and oily liquids. This accident in the lab led to the Scotchgard® family of products that repel stains and also allow for the removal of oily stains from synthetic fabrics. Sherman holds 13 patents with Smith in flurochemical polymers and polymerization processes. Sherman and Smith were inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

Judy W. Reed, of Washington, D.C., and Sarah E. Goode, of Chicago, were the first African American women inventors to receive patents. Reed may not have been able to sign her name, but she may be the first African American woman to receive a patent. Signed with an “X,” patent no. 305,474, granted September 23, 1884, is for a dough kneader and roller. Goode’s patent for a cabinet bed, patent no. 322,177, was issued on July 14, 1885. Goode, the owner of a Chicago furniture store at the time of her invention, invented a folding bed that could be formed into a desk when not in use. It was a great space-saving idea!

Patent for Phonograph Issued February 19, 1878
One of Edison’s first great inventionsThomas A. Edison, one of the outstanding geniuses in the history of technology, received patent no. 200,521 for a phonograph on February 19, 1878. This patent is just one of the more than one thousand Edison was granted for his inventions.

Edison was exceptionally inquisitive, and while tinkering with the telegraph transmitter he discovered that when played back at high speeds, the tape sounded like spoken words. He figured out that the human voice, and other sounds, could cause a light material plate to vibrate. And, when properly placed, a needle could indent the plate, recording the vibrations, and found that yet another needle could play them back. He eventually rigged a tinfoil cylinder and a stylus with which he recorded, “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

Edison’s inventions have been a mainstay of our economy for over 100 years. At the turn of the 20th century, Edison’s New Jersey laboratory (now a national monument), was the hub around which factories employing 5,000 people produced new products, including the mimeograph, the fluoroscope, the alkaline storage battery, dictating machines, and motion picture cameras and projectors. The electric light bulb, his most famous invention, was the foundation for today’s General Electric Company.

U.S. PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE CELEBRATES VALENTINE’S DAY
Numerous patents and trademarks have a love connection E’S DAYPatents and trademarks may not be synonymous with Valentine’s Day. However, the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted patents and trademarks to many types of candies, flowers, and jewelry associated with the celebration.

Roses are a huge business on Valentine’s Day. Coincidentally, the first plant patent issued by the USPTO was for a rose (PP1). Henry F. Bosenberg, of New Brunswick, N.J., received the patent for a climbing rose on August 18, 1931. Red roses are the flower most often sent on Valentine’s Day and Fred H. Howard, of Montebello, Calif., received Plant Patent No. 953, for an early hybrid tea rose, on June 20, 1950. Its flower is described as rose red, very appropriate for Valentine’s Day. A more recent patent for a red rose (plant patent no. 11,834), was granted on April 3, 2001 to J. Benjamin Williams, of Silver Spring, Md., for a climbing rose named “Scarlet Star.”

Florists’ Transworld Delivery, Inc.®, more commonly known as FTD, offers a service closely associated with Valentine’s Day flowers, and holds trademarks for its symbol depicting a flower deliverer (registration no. 0821318) and for its toll-free number, 1-800-SEND-FTD® (registration no. 1848732). According to the Greeting Card Association, one billion Valentine cards are sent each year. One famous purveyor of greeting cards is Hallmark®, who holds a trademark for its gold crown symbol (registration no. 0525798). Candy is another Valentine’s Day tradition and some well-known brands are Godiva® (registration no. 0836376), Russell Stover® (registration no. 0739454), and Sweethearts® conversation heart candy (registration no. 2172266). Jewelry is another popular Valentine gift. Zales®, a well-known jewelry store chain, markets itself specifically for Valentine’s Day with the slogan, “Zales the Diamond and Valentine Store®” (trademark registration no. 2112448).

AFRICAN AMERICANS HOLD PATENTS ON IMPORTANT INVENTIONS
USPTO recognizes African American creativity during Black History MonthBlack History Month, held each year during the month of February, celebrates African American cultures and heritage and recognizes the many contributions African Americans have made to this nation.

In conjunction with Black History Month, the Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is recognizing some very special African Americans whose inventions have made a great contribution in making this country the most technologically advanced nation in the world.

Granville T. Woods, born in Columbus, Ohio in 1856, was known as the “Black Edison.” During his lifetime he received over 30 patents and successfully fought suits brought against him by Thomas Edison for the rights to certain electrical inventions, including railway telegraphy (patent no. 388,803), which allowed dispatchers to communicate by telegraph and warn train engineers of oncoming trains. Another of Wood’s better-known inventions is the air brake (patent no. 701,981).

Ivan Yaeger, who was born and still resides in Miami, received patent no. 4,685,928 for an artificial arm and hand assembly in 1987. This revolutionary prosthetic arm is designed to move drive motors to a level that improves range, variety, and speed of motion, and allows for better toleration by the wearer.

Dr. Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist from New York, but living in Los Angeles when she received her patent, became the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention. Dr. Bath’s patent (no. 4,744,360), a method for removing cataract lenses, transformed eye surgery, using a laser device making the procedure more accurate.

Dr. James West, born in 1931 in Prince Edward County, Va., received patent no. 3,118,022 in 1964 (while an employee at Bell Laboratories), along with Gerhard Sessler, for the electroacoustic transducer, an electret microphone, which offered greater reliability, higher precision, lower cost and smaller size. The electret microphone revolutionized the microphone industry, with almost one billion manufactured each year. West and Sessler were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999.

Patent for Play-Doh® Issued January 26, 1965
Cincinnati natives’ invention becomes a popular toyNoah W. and Joseph S. McVicker, while living in Cincinnati, received patent #3,167,440 for a soft, pliable plastic modeling composition, today better known as Play-Doh®.

Play-Doh® was originally designed as a wallpaper cleaner. Its similarity to regular modeling clay, without the toxicity or mess, makes Play-Doh® a great toy. Over 700 million pounds of Play-Doh® have been sold to date.

In 1960, the first rendition of Play-Doh® Pete, a boy with a beret, was introduced. Pete, as well as the Play-Doh® logo, have changed over the years. Registration # 1221942, one example of the famous Play-Doh® trademarks, illustrates a classic rendition of Pete with his beret. A more modern Play-Doh® Pete, looking a little older and donning a baseball cap, can be found in Registration #2504268. Woman Invented Dishwasher
Patent for first practical dish washing machine issued December 28, 1886Josephine Garis Cochran invented the first useful dishwasher in Shelbyville, Illinois and received patent # 355,139 on December 28, 1886.

Cochrane, a wealthy woman who entertained often, wanted a machine that could wash dishes faster than her servants, and without breaking them. When she couldn’t find one, she built it herself.

She measured the dishes first, then she made wire compartments, each designed to fit plates, cups, or saucers. The compartments were placed inside a wheel that lay flat within a copper boiler. A motor turned the wheel while hot soapy water squirted from the bottom of the boiler and rained down on the dishes. Her invention worked! She showed the dishwasher at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, but only restaurants and hotels showed interest in it. Cochrane founded a company to manufacture her dishwashers, which eventually became KitchenAid®. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that dishwashers started to become a standard household kitchen appliance.

Mark Twain Granted His First Patent on December 19, 1871
Famous author and humorist was also an inventorSamuel L. Clemens, born in Florida, Mo., received patent #121,992 on December 19, 1871 for an Improvement in Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments.

Clemens, better known as Mark Twain and famous for stories such as Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, also was an inventor and received a total of three patents. While living in Hartford, Conn., Twain, received his first patent for an adjustable strap that could be used to tighten shirts at the waist. This strap attached to the back of a shirt and fastened with buttons to keep it in place and was easy to remove. Twain’s invention was not only used for shirts, but for underpants and women’s corsets as well. His purpose was to do away with suspenders, which he considered uncomfortable. Twain also received patents for a self-pasting scrapbook in 1873, that was very popular and sold over 25,000 copies, and in 1885 for a history trivia game.

Twain also believed strongly in the value of the patent system. In his book, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Hank Morgan, the Connecticut Yankee, said “…the very first official thing I did in my administration-and it was on the very first day of it too-was to start a patent office; for I knew that a country without a patent office and good patent laws was just a crab and couldn’t travel anyway but sideways and backwards.”

Patent for First Synthetic Plastic Issued December 7, 1909
Baekeland’s invention was popular Bakelite
Leo Hendrick Baekeland was living in Yonkers, N.Y. when he received patent #942,699 for the first synthetic plastic, known as Bakelite, an invention that revolutionized the manufacture of everything from buttons to car parts.

Baekeland, a successful innovator, used money from the sale of his first invention to Eastman Kodak, photographic paper, to develop phenolic resin or Bakelite, a non-flammable plastic that was less expensive and more versatile than other plastics of the day. It was first used to make electrical and automobile insulators, but is now best known for beautifully colored novelty and jewelry items, first popular during the Depression era and highly collectible today.

Baekeland was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame in 1978.

CAT Scan Patent Issued November 25, 1975
X-ray system saves lives by early detection of illness and injury
Robert S. Ledley, born in 1926 in New York City, received patent # 3,922,552 on November 25, 1975 for the diagnostic X-ray system, also known as the CAT (Computed Axial Tomography) scan.

Ledley’s invention, the ACTA (Automatic Computerized Transverse Axial) diagnostic X-ray scanner, was the first whole-body computerized tomography (CT) machine, and provided views of the body and brain not seen with traditional X-rays. This was achieved using computers to generate three-dimensional images from flat X-ray pictures of cross-sections of the body, called slices. Ledley’s technology allowed early diagnoses of illness and disease, thus saving lives.

Ledley also used computerized tomography in radiation therapy and in the diagnosis of bone disease. He was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame in 1990.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Joins in the Celebration of Thanksgiving
Recognizes patents and trademarks related to ThanksgivingThe Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office joins in the celebration of Thanksgiving by recognizing some patents and trademarks associated with this festive holiday.

Food often takes center stage at Thanksgiving, and there are many well-known Thanksgiving-related products protected by patents and trademarks. One way to spend more time with family and less in the kitchen cleaning up is by using a disposable cooking pan (patent #5,628,427) or a cooking jacket (patent #4,942,809) for the turkey, ham or roast. One non-traditional, but increasingly popular, way to cook a turkey is deep-frying, and one type of equipment used in this preparation is protected by patent # 5,758,569.

Some well-known trademarks associated with turkey and dressing, must-haves at many Thanksgiving tables, are Butterball (registration #1151836) for turkey products and Stove Top (registration #0949459) for stuffing. What holiday feast would be complete without cranberry sauce such as Ocean Spray (registration #2150919)? Desserts are always the final complement to a Thanksgiving feast. For those that do not bake their own, Sara Lee’s slogan for its pies and cakes, “Nobody Doesn’t Like Sara Lee,” is protected by trademark registration #1885156.

Traffic signal patent issued November 20, 1923
Son of former slaves recognized for public safety inventions Garrett Morgan, the son of former slaves, was born in Paris, Kentucky, and was living in Cleveland, Ohio when he received patent # 1,475,024 on November 20, 1923 for the three-way traffic signal. Dependence on the automobile grew rapidly after World War I, and Morgan saw that existing mechanical “stop” and “go” signals were dangerous because they had no caution indicator to buffer traffic flow. So he patented a three-armed signal mounted on a T-shaped pole that indicated “stop” and “go” for traffic in two directions, and also had another signal for stopping traffic in all directions before the stop and go signals changed — the forerunner of today’s yellow light.

General Electric bought Morgan’s patent for $40,000, and his traffic management device was used throughout North America until it was replaced by the red, yellow and green-light traffic signals currently used around the world.

Garrett Morgan received wide recognition for his outstanding contributions to public safety. The gas mask he invented in 1912 (U.S. 1,113,675 issued in 1914) was used during World War I to protect soldiers from chlorine gas fumes. In 1916, Morgan wore his own mask design to rescue men trapped by a gas explosion in a tunnel being constructed under Lake Erie. The City of Cleveland, Ohio honored Garrett Morgan with a gold medal for his heroic efforts in 1916.

Patent for Safety Razor Issued November 15, 1904
Gillette’s invention initiated line of world-famous grooming productsKing C. Gillette was born in Fon du Lac,Wisconsin, and while residing in Boston, received patent #775,134 for the disposable safety razor on November 15, 1904. Prior to the disposable razor, shaving was done with a straight-edge razor which had a thick, sharp blade, making it dangerous. The blade also needed continuous sharpening, making it expensive because the blade soon became worn and could no longer be used. Gillette wanted to create a razor blade that would not need sharpening and could be disposed of once it became dull. He invented a razor blade made out of very thin sheet-steel that was placed in a holder to secure the blade for shaving. Once the blade became dull, it was discarded and replaced by a new one, using the same holder.

In 1901, Gillette formed the American Safety Razor Company (soon thereafter renamed for Gillette himself). For the first time, using his portrait and signature on the packaging (trademark registration #0056921), razor blades were sold in multiples, with the razor handle a one-time purchase. The Gillette Safety Razor Company has thrived for 100 years, and over the decades expanded its line to such well-known products as Foamy® shaving cream (trademark registration #1015038), Right Guard® antiperspirant (trademark registration #0692546), and Duracell batteries (trademark registration #0793273). Today, Gillette has over $10 billion in sales, in over 200 countries.

Patent For Preserving Blood Issued November 10, 1942
Washingtonian’s invention made blood bank possibleDr. Charles Drew, who was born in Washington, D.C., received patent #2,301,710 on November 10, 1942 for a method of preserving human blood. Prior to Dr. Drew’s invention, transfusions required a nearly simultaneous exchange of blood from the donor to the patient before the blood became tainted. Dr. Drew discovered that plasma, which has a longer shelf life than blood and is less prone to contamination, could be separated from whole blood and used in transfusions, thus paving the way for the blood bank.

The pioneering blood work done by Dr. Drew saved the lives of thousands of allied service men and women during the Second World War. After the war, Dr. Drew became the founding medical director of the Red Cross Blood Bank in the United States, and was head of blood collection for the U.S. Army and Navy.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF OUR NATION’S HEROES
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Recognizes Trademarks Related to Veterans DayThe Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office joins in the commemoration of Veterans Day by recognizing some patriotic trademarks.

Veterans Day has its roots in a 1921 ceremony first held at Arlington National Cemetery to honor an unnamed soldier, “known but to God.” Patriotic symbolism abounds on Veterans Day and many of these symbols have trademark registrations.

The American flag, for example, is closely associated with Veterans Day. The flag has taken on added significance for Americans since the terrorist attacks of September 11, reminding us of the original story behind our national anthem. Francis Scott Key was inspired to write, “The Star Spangled Banner,” during the British attack on Baltimore’s Fort McHenry. The flag that inspired Key is now at the Smithsonian Institution, and the group working to preserve it has registered its name, the “Star Spangled Preservation Project” as a trademark (#2450336).

Veterans Day 2001 gives us the opportunity to offer renewed appreciation for the men and women of the United States armed forces, particularly those associated with Operation Enduring Freedom. Our armed forces have many trademarks associated with their mottos and symbols. One well-known mark is the Army’s motto, “Be All You Can Be” (registration# 2063499). The nation’s oldest major veteran’s organization, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), was established in 1899 and has been a major voice for our nation’s veterans. “VFW” a symbol of volunteerism and community service, is a registered trademark (#1686881).

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME
Patents and Trademarks related to America’s Favorite PastimeThe Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office joins in the celebration of this year’s World Series by recognizing some patents and trademarks relative to baseball.

Baseball is America’s pastime. The thousands of patented inventions associated with the sport are testament to that. Most recently patents have been issued on a way to improve a batter’s swing (patent #6,306,050); a swing speed indicator (patent #6,173,610) that measures the batter’s swing using a digital readout that can be slipped onto any bat; a baseball trainer, which helps pitchers practice by indicating a “strike” or “ball” as well as the speed of the pitch by using a microcomputer (patent # 5,566,964); and a glove (patent #5,113,530) with inflatable chambers which softens the impact of an incoming baseball or softball. There are also numerous patents for softball and t-ball. Design patent # 418,569 is for a t-ball matt, which helps children position themselves to hit the ball. Patent #4,993,708 covers a batting tee. Design patent #402,414 is for a helmet that can be used for a player to pull their ponytail through while playing softball, t-ball or little league baseball.

Trademarks also play an important role in baseball and are seen on and off the field. Most professional team logos, equipment and even mascots, have trademark registrations. The New York Yankees, which have won the most World Series Championships, have a very well known and recognized logo, which has trademark registration #1898998 for use on baseball shirts. The Arizona Diamondbacks, a relatively new team, has several trademark applications pending, including serial #76161641 for baseball uniforms and other sport-related clothing. Trademarks for baseball equipment include Rawlings (registration #1149932) and Wilson (registration #1553005) for sporting good equipment such as baseballs, gloves, and bases.

High Octane Gasoline Patent Issued October 19, 1948
Invention supported American air dominance in World War II and today is used to produce over half of the world’s gasolineDonald Campbell, Homer Martin, Charles Tyson and Eger Murphree, four inventors working for Exxon, revolutionized the petroleum industry when they created the first efficient and continuous way to refine crude oil. Their invention, known as fluid cat cracking, was granted patent #2,451,804, and came on the heels of America’s entry into World War II, meeting the military’s need to increase the yield of high-octane aviation fuel. This invention is considered one of the most important chemical engineering achievements of the 20th century. In addition to producing gasoline, their invention is used to manufacture heating oil, propane, butane, and chemicals that are instrumental in products such as plastics and synthetic rubbers.

Campbell, from Clinton, Iowa, had patents on 30 inventions. Martin, who came from Chicago, Illinois, was one of Exxon’s most prolific inventors with 82 patents. Murphree, who was from Bayonne, New Jersey, went on to become President of Standard Oil of New Jersey, and Tyson, also from Chicago, Illinois, held over 50 patents, mainly in the petroleum processing area.

Patent for Bread-Toaster Issued October 18, 1921
The automatic (pop-up) toaster becomes a standard in American householdsCharles P. Strite, born in Minneapolis, MN, received patent #1,394,450 on October 18, 1921 for the bread-toaster. During World War I, Strite worked in a manufacturing plant in Stillwater, MN, where he became frustrated with the burned toast served in the cafeteria. Strite, determined to find a way of toasting bread that did not depend on human attention, invented the pop-up toaster with a variable timer. In 1925, using a redesigned version of Strite’s toaster, the Toastmaster Company began to market the first household toaster that could brown bread on both sides simultaneously, set the heating element on a timer, and eject the toast when finished. By 1926, Charles Strite’s Toastmaster was available to the public and was a huge success.

Kodak Film Patent Issued October 14, 1884
First commercial film made “snap shot” possibleGeorge Eastman, who was born in Waterville, New York, received patent #306,594 on October 14, 1884 for photographic film. Eastman’s invention revolutionized photography by using coated paper and rollers, rather than heavy glass dry plates, to reproduce images. Eastman began looking for ways to “make the camera as convenient as the pencil,” after amassing the heavy, complicated, and expensive equipment he needed to keep a picture record of his vacation. This invention allowed him to mass produce a small hand-held box camera filled with rolls of film with 100 exposures. Millions of Americans recorded the first snap shots of their everyday lives using the Kodak camera, which was introduced in 1888. In 1977, George Eastman was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

In addition to an inventive spirit, Eastman also had a strong belief in the power of advertising. He first registered “KODAK®,” a term he created, as a trademark in 1888. Today the word “Kodak,” and the Eastman Kodak Company’s distinctive yellow trade dress, are well-known around the world.

Patent for Xerox Technology Issued October 6, 1942
Electrophotography was precursor of the first office copierChester F. Carlson, considered the father of xerographic printing, received patent #2,297,691 on October 6, 1942 for electrophotography. Carlson’s invention, the first method of making images by dry copying, evolved from his desire to eliminate hand reproduction of patent specifications and drawings at the electronics firm where he worked as a physicist. In 1947, he assigned the commercial rights to his invention to the Haloid Company, later renamed the Xerox Corporation. Carlson, who was born in Seattle, Washington, was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1981.

Cardiac pacemaker patent issued October 9, 1962
Patent covered the first cardiac pacemaker implantOn October 9, 1962, Wilson Greatbatch received patent #3,057,356 for the cardiac pacemaker. Born in Buffalo, New York, Greatbatch’s innovation was selected in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers as one of the two major engineering contributions to society during the previous 50 years. Greatbatch established a series of companies to manufacture or license his inventions, including Greatbach Enterprises, which produces most of the world’s pacemaker batteries. In 1986, Greatbatch was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

HISPANIC AMERICANS HOLD PATENTS ON IMPORTANT INVENTIONS
USPTO recognizes Hispanic American creativity during Hispanic Heritage MonthNational Hispanic Heritage Month, held each year from September 15 – October 15, celebrates Hispanic cultures and heritage and recognizes the many contributions Hispanic Americans have made to this nation.

In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, the Department of Commerce’s United States Patent and Trademark Office is recognizing some very special Hispanic Americans whose inventions contributed a great deal to making this country the most technologically advanced nation in the world.

Luis Alvarez received patent #2,480,208 in 1949 for a radio distance and direction indicator, essentially radar systems used during World War II to locate and land aircraft. He also developed, with others, the hydrogen bubble chamber, which was used to detect subatomic particles. This resulted in a major rethinking of nuclear theories. Alvarez was born in San Francisco and was living in Santa Fe when he received his patent. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968, and in 1978 was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame.

Victor Ochoa, was born in 1850 in Ojinaga, Mexico and resided in El Paso, Texas, New York and Peekskill, N.Y. when he received several patents, including two for adjustable wrenches (patents #1,417,196 and #1,454,333); others for the rail magnetic brake for street cars (patent #873,587) which he sold to the American Brake Company; the reversible motor (patent #718,508); and an improvement for the windmill that was to be constructed cylindrically (patent #1,319,174). Ochoa also received numerous patents from other countries.

Ellen Ochoa, who became the first Hispanic female astronaut in 1990, was a co-inventor on three patents in the field of optical information processing, using an optical system or laser light to extract information from an image rather than using an electronic or computer system. Her patents are for an optical inspection system (patent #4,674,824) in 1987, an optical object recognition method (patent# 4,838,644) in 1989, as well as a method for noise removal in images (patent #4,949,389) in 1990. Ochoa was born in Los Angeles in 1958 and listed her residences on her patents as Stanford and Pleasanton, Calif.

A number of well-known U.S. trademarks protect products and services with roots in the Hispanic culture. Trademark registration #2444627, for example, protects the word Selena when used to sell dolls named after Selena, the late Tejano singing sensation. Registration #1980712 ensures that the term MSM/Miami Sound Machine is protected for the use in compact discs, videotapes and records for the group founded by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. The word Goya is synonymous with Latin American food products and its use in association with such items as Vienna sausage, canned fruit juices, soups, and spices, among others, is protected by registration #0962193. Corona and Tecate, two Mexican beers popular in the U.S., are protected by registration #1727969 and registration #1666892.

TELEVISION PATENT ISSUED AUGUST 26, 1930 On August 26, 1930, Philo Taylor Farnsworth received patent #1,773,980 for the first television system. Farnsworth, who was born in Beaver, Utah, produced the first all-electric television image at the age of 20. Farnsworth’s television patents covered scanning, focusing, synchronizing, contrast, control, and power. Farnsworth also invented the first cold cathode ray tubes and the first simple electronic microscope. In 1984, Farnsworth was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

IFIA anti-crisis activity

In the background of the present global economy crisis there is a social-ethical crisis, confusion about the basic values in the economy. This confusion is about the separation of financial and real economic processes, a deficit in the democratic character of the economy (the oppression of “smalls”), and the problem of invention and innovation.
One characteristic factor of the latter is the devaluation of inventions: neglecting the process of creating new solutions.

IFIA’s main anti-crisis activity is thus about stressing the importance of inventions in general, and presenting new inventions, specifically. The IFIA would like to deliberate its motto:

“Inventors – Inventions – Innovation – Prosperity”.

For this reason IFIA organizes the following series of events.

The IFIA official events in the second part of year 2009: lFIA Official events Warning: Event in Romania is postponed!

I would like to call your attention the importance of broad participation of IFIA members on the IFIA official events.

I ask IFIA members to send information about the decision concerning your participations on the IFIA official events. This information is essential for the coordination work and for the offering of your special discounts.

Michael Jackson video tonight on MTVJ was stuck on the most amazing picture of Michael Jackson in one of his first music videos – a transmission glitch that glittered . . .

Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson's death

A few minutes ago, tonight before 3.20 a.m., when MTVJ was doing its tribute to Michael Jackson, the video that was transmitting stopped and stuck on one image from one of his first videos. It stayed on that image at least three or four minutes – on that one image from the video.

It was strange because the way the lighting looked in that scene, there was a stream of vibrant green light that came into his body from behind and emanated across from the top right of the screen to the left where he stood motionless looking down. It was as if seeing him for the first time with the look of sadness and seriousness on his face. The dance was stopped in the middle of the song, just as the life of Michael Jackson was stopped before its dance had ended. And it stopped long before his song was to be finished.

Behind him on the left there was a splay of the green light from the staged lighting that created an angel wing that seemed to be attached behind his right arm. In the distance behind him on the right was a tiny double of himself with rays of green light emanating from him with also what looked like angel wings made from the bright green light embracing him. He was stopped in motion, a ghost of the life he had lived with all its vibrancy and sorrow captured in that moment of stopped time standing in my television screen without a sound as minute after minute passed.

I didn’t think to grab my camera and capture this unusual experience where the video stopped in the midst of its transmission and remained stuck in that moment of the video. After several frozen disquieting minutes on that one frame, the MTV transmission melted into a digital mosaic of boxes and jumped into the middle of the next video they were playing with Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan cutting up and playing like two really big kids.

Michael Jackson, we all miss you. Living as a creative life will never be the same without you here – I am very sad that you are gone. I hope you are dancing through the heavens with all the joy that God can give you every moment of eternity. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.

How To Paint Ocean Waves – Night Sea – Painting of the Ocean Waves at Night – Deep Blue Black Sea – How To Paint the Ocean Waves of the Night Sea painting in watercolors

cricketdiane09 - Night Sea - 2007 art card - original acrylic ocean painting with computer effects added

**

“Night Sea” – Ocean waves painting of the sea at night. This ocean waves art card was created in acrylic paint and then scanned and photographed to put it into the computer. Filters from several computer software programs were added to change the overall look from the acrylic ocean painting style to watercolor effects.

A painting can be created using watercolor that would convey this look by using flowing open white areas and translucent washed ochre in small touches which are then removed – these washes must be very light to prevent the ochre pigment from fixing to the paper and destroying the overall flow of the night sea image.

The placement of successive washes in ultramarine, prussian blue, and small touches of cobalt fill out the picture plane. Each wash becomes successively darker and deeper with mars black or payne’s grey added toward the end of the process. It is possible to protect some areas with frisket but that isn’t necessary if the work is staged to dry between the addition of the very darkest elements.

The depth of the ocean’s night sky over the sea waves can be achieved by a mix a black and prussian blue with a depth of hue not usually reserved for watercolor paintings. Touches of this blue-black mix can be coordinated in the picture by underlaying some shadow areas beneath the waves and especially in the foreground to detail the flowing, fluid essence of the ocean which will bring these elements into enhanced focus.

Although I didn’t create this painting in watercolor originally but rather in acrylic paints, the effects can be generated in layers of watercolors to re-create the emotion, the essence and the elements of the ocean waves in the night sea.

Businesses that I wish somebody would start – Creating your own business – innovation – inventiveness – US economic crisis

I’ve noticed that when I need money or my children need money, there are ideas and business concepts and how to get money things that I stumble over or generate from my mind.

Over the last 35 years of my life, the husbands that I’ve had, my children, my friends and my family hear these ideas whenever we need money and what happens? Nothing happens. They say, “uhhhhhh!” with a facial expression that can only be described as disgust and “not again.” Then, the ideas are used by other people in the community who hear about them when my family members or friends are running their mouths about it to get attention and have something to talk about around other people. I’m sick of it, so in the interest of honestly knowing that I’ll never get anywhere with any of it –

Here are some of the businesses that I wish someone would start –

CurrentTv has an option of making video “pods” which are seven minutes long. They can be submitted on their site. They pay for them – probably not a lot but something. My idea is to take someone onto the Marta trains in Atlanta and discuss the headstart that Atlanta has made on green tech transportation systems. They are currently extending the Marta system to make it easier to get back and forth from outlying suburban communities. I would put a scene of Atlanta in the background where the train is coming through on its elevated track behind the commentator to describe the way this people mover has made a difference in the smoldering fumes from cars using the freeways. And,  the  Marta buses which are fueled by natural gas would be covered in the same video to round out the story. It would make a wonderful green tech story that conveys how Atlanta and other cities are making a huge difference which started quite a few years ago to decrease the physical pollutions from commuting and car traffic.

***

Another business concept –

Rent-A-Dad business. Since there are so many domestic violence situations that have cost women and children the Dad of their family and because there is such a need for a father figure to be available – I think that a business which offers employment to good, decent men that would spend some time each week with families of single women and their children to have picnics, go to the park, help at the grocery store and play football out in the yard would be great. Its just a thought.

***

There is a possible business in this one that I would love to see get done –

Every time I have had to send money to my sons or daughters or friends, it has been a completely impossible or extremely difficult proposition. There needs to be a way to send money or gift cards for Kroger or Wal-Mart or CVS for baby formula that costs no more than $3.00 to accomplish it. Most of the stores make out the gift card which can be purchased at the store, online or over the phone, but they physically mail that card. I could do that myself and have the person wait a week to get it. I’m talking about moving $25.00 to somebody anywhere in the US, either in cash or in a gift card that shows up the same day in the location where they are with a cost of only $3.00 to get it done. And, some way for it to get done online, or at the store or bank, and over the phone without requiring use of a credit card or bank account or debit card but allowing those to be used if desirable. When family members can be homeless or do without lights, heat, food or diapers and formula unless they get some money now, it is obscene and ridiculous that in this day and age, money can only be sent to them for a $25 service fee or several days later through a gift card.

***

I would love to see a new type of corporation built that is a corporation with a conscience where people’s interests are served in equal proportion to the corporate interests and where inventors and creatives are honored with reasonable fair market value for what they create. In the long-term analysis, the company would be stronger, the value greater and the foundation for loyalty to the company’s interests would be enhanced. It would also encourage innovation, inventiveness, creativity and applying these things to the tasks at hand, the company’s offerings and the corporations’ services and products. Hasn’t it been long enough to see that not doing this has cost our entire nation and every business which has engaged in taking advantage of people’s innovative talents without giving a fair return for them?

***

Another business I want to see built –

There is a need in every household in every city and suburb of America for a gizmo that literally cleans the air as it comes in the window. There is an air cleaner which is industrial sized but more of the home models than not are difficult to clean, do not take chemicals and mold spores out of the air, leave pollens and micro lint sized particles floating around unless an expensive hepa filter is used and changed every three weeks. The ionizing feature for the air is helpful in some ways, but there needs to be an air cleaner that literally drops the crap from the air, kills the mold and pollen spores, kills the dust mites and cleans the chemicals from car exhaust and industries that are exotic and pervasive. The fine dust from quarrying and huge air-exposed piles of cement and other industrial products fly around in every community, come through the windows or air-intake systems for air conditioning and there should be some simple, safe and effective way to take it out of the air for homes and apartments. That is the product I want to see and something which can be purchased for less than $50 where every home could have one.

These paintings of the sea are acrylic paintings in miniature done on a variety of surfaces including mat board, canvas, watercolor paper, bristol board and canvas paper. Each miniature sea painting is 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches – about the size of a playing card, collectible trading card and slightly larger than a credit card.

Paintings of the ocean waves in this miniature size as I have painted them, are filled with emotion and color – and is a real painting that you can hold in your hand. You can feel the actual strokes of the paint in the surface of each unique sea painting. To cover postage and handling, there is a $2.00 charge, which can be sent by mail or through PayPal.

Total size of each card is 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches (2 1/2 in. x 3 1/2 in.). They have been individually painted, signed and titled on the back with scenes of ocean waves and sky in each original miniature ocean painting.

The subject matter available will be ocean waves painting or ocean waves painting with boat. They are in an emotional painting style to capture the feeling of the ocean waves in a moment of time.

The examples you see here are ones I have painted which have already been sold and are now only available in prints. These examples of ocean waves miniature trading card paintings are not going to be identical to those offered. Each miniature sea painting is different and one-of-a-kind.

If you would like an ocean waves trading card painting that I have painted – order today – send $2.00 for postage and handling in the USA or $3.50 for International (Outside the USA), plus your name, address, city, state and country with postal code (zipcode).

And, do you want an ocean waves miniature painting or an ocean waves / sea painting miniature with a boat in it? The boats are purely imaginary and not intended to convey reality as a mechanical drawing would do. These are paintings, not comic strips.

Some of the ocean waves paintings have the blue and aqua tones of the sea and some have sunsets of the sea, night sea, early dusk ocean waves with muted tones and some are deep at sea without any sign of coast or shore.

Some of these miniature sea paintings / ocean waves paintings in trading card size have exotic color combinations with a flurry of ocean waves and some are calm, serene seas with touches of colors not uncommon to the ocean at different times of the day and in certain weather conditions over the sea.

Send $2.00 by mail, or use PayPal as described below to receive your own original miniature trading card sized ocean waves painting by CricketDiane. Please remember to note whether you would like an ocean waves miniature painting or an ocean waves painting with a boat miniature sea painting.

Small Business Grants

We’ve all seen the headlines: “Millions in free government money for your business.” Late-night infomercials and Internet advertisements promise grants to start or expand a business. Sound too good to be true? It is.

Facts About Government Grants

The federal government does not provide grants for starting and expanding a business.

Grants from the federal government are only available to non-commercial organizations, such as non-profits and educational institutions in areas such as, medicine, education, scientific research and technology development. The federal government also provides grants to state and local governments to assist them with economic development.

Some business grants are available through state and local programs, non-profit organizations and other groups. For example, some states provide grants for expanding child care centers; creating energy efficient technology; and developing marketing campaigns for tourism. These grants are not necessarily free money, and usually require the recipient to match funds or combine the grant with other forms of financing such as a loan.

If you are not one of these specialized business, both federal and state government agencies provide financial assistance programs that helps small business owners obtain low-interest loans and venture capital financing from commercial lenders.

How to Find Grants

If you are a small business owner, use our Small Business Loans and Grants Search Tool to find specialized small business grant programs.

If you are a non-profit organization or a for-profit business involved in scientific and technology research and development, consult the following resources:

  • Grants.gov
Find and apply for thousands of federal government grant programs.
  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
Search a comprehensive database of grants, loans and other assistance programs available from federal agencies.

The following is a selection of major grant programs provided by federal government agencies.

http://www.atmocean.com/

Atmocean’s wave-driven ocean upwelling system operates in the open ocean hundreds of miles from land where there is a steady supply of large ocean waves. Each pump, typically reaching down to depths of 100 meters to 400 meters beneath the surface, employs a surface buoy to capture this kinetic wave energy and pump the deep ocean toward the surface.

The deeper ocean is both colder and contains higher levels of nutrients. Upwelling of this deeper ocean, whether caused by storms and currents or by future deployment of Atmocean pumps, triggers the growth of phytoplankton. To metabolize the nutrients, phytoplankton take in dissolved CO2. This natural process today is absorbing nearly half of mankind’s emissions of CO2 while providing food for nearly all life in the upper ocean. But global warming is stratifying the upper ocean and reducing nutrients which reach the sunlit zone. Fewer phytoplankton grow, diminishing the ocean food chain and absorbing less CO2. This causes a feedback loop as more warming lessens natural ocean absorption of CO2, which then remains in the atmosphere to cause more warming.

In the years and decades ahead, Atmocean believes our wave-driven ocean upwelling system – which closely mimics and slightly enhances the natural ocean process – can play a critical role in restoring our ocean environment and cutting short this feedback loop. On the adjoining pages you can learn more about how our technology works and some of its applications. For more details, please contact Philip W. Kithil, CEO, at atmocean.kithil@gmail.com

Reduce Hurricane Intensity

Given the very active hurricane season of 2008 – refreshing our memories of 2005 (Katrina, Rita, and Wilma) and 2004 (Charlie, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne) – there is renewed interest in deploying Atmocean upwelling pumps to cool the upper ocean and reduce hurricane intensity.

We have used the GFDL coupled ocean-atmosphere tracking & intensity model used by National Hurricane Center to model the effects on intensity attributable to cooling the upper ocean. From this we have developed the following deployment strategy:

  • Deploy Atmocean pumps in the path of the hurricane.
  • Cover an area 150km square.
  • The area covered by the pumps begins offshore where at least 10 degrees C. colder water is found (typically a minimum depth of 75-100 meters).
  • Pumps are deployed 24 to 36 hours in advance.

Since the hurricane generates ever-increasing waves, more cold water is pumped as the storm approaches, resulting in overall cooling by about one degree C. – enough to lower peak winds 5% to 20%. Since hurricane damages are proportional to the cube of windspeed, losses could be reduced by 15% (e.g. 100mph reduced to 95 mph) to 49% (100mph reduced to 80mph).

Both in 2005 and this year, a portion of the Gulf Stream spun off and formed a large eddy of very warm, deep water in the Gulf of Mexico. If an approaching storm has a well-formed eye, low wind shear in the upper atmosphere, and crosses this warm eddy, rapid intensification is likely. Therefore, a further strategy is to deploy Atmocean pumps weeks ahead of time in the warm eddy to reduce its heat content and mitigate against rapid intensification. We hope to conduct further modelling of this strategy in the near future.

To discuss in more detail how Atmocean’s technology might help reduce hurricane intensity, please contact Philip W. Kithil, CEO, at atmocean.kithil@gmail.com

http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_wind.shtml

If you find an old windmill for sale, first make sure it’s intended for generating electricity instead of just pumping water. One common old windmill that’s often found for sale used is the Wincharger. The other popular wind generator of the era was the Jacobs. These were of higher quality than Winchargers–but many of both are still flying today. Several people around the U.S. restore, service and stock parts for old windmills. And the Jacobs is still being made today! The current production models are very large and expensive, with over 10 kW output–they are magnificently designed and built. Check out the Manufacturer’s Website for more information and cool pictures.

Electricity producing wind generators were very popular in the 1920s and 1930s all over rural America. They were available in many different sizes and voltages, and can often be found for sale in rural farm communities. Most models are quite suitable for a modern remote power system no matter what voltage they are. If you are able to locate an old wind generator, some basic maintenance (rust removal, lubrication, and testing) could put it back in working order quickly. They were built to last–before Rural Electricifation, they were the ONLY source of power for many rural farms and ranches. Backwoods Home Magazine published an excellent article in 2001 about finding and restoring old wind generators.

OPTIONS FOR GETTING STARTED IN WIND POWER

Build your own!

Homebrew Wind Power by Dan Bartmann and Dan Fink. The best book out there about building and flying do-it-yourself wind turbines. We know, because we wrote it!
Order it from our Online Store HERE.

Building a wind generator from scratch is not THAT difficult of a project. You will need a shop with basic power and hand tools, and some degree of dedication. Large wind generators of 2000 Watts and up are a major project needing very strong construction, but smaller ones in the 700-1000 Watt, 8-11 foot range can be built fairly easily! In fact, we highly recommend that you tackle a smaller wind turbine before even thinking about building a large one. You’ll need to be able to cut and weld steel, and a metal lathe can be handy (though you could hire a machine shop that turns brake rotors do do some small steps for you).

In most locations, GENTLE winds (5-15 mph) are the most common, and strong winds are much more rare. As you’ll see by examining our latest machines, our philosophy about designing wind turbines is to make large, sturdy machines that produce good power in low wind speeds, and are able to survive high wind events while still producing maximum power. The power available in the wind goes up by a factor of 8 as the windspeed doubles.
Other critical factors are rotor size and tower height. The power a wind turbine can harvest goes up by at least a factor of 4 as you double the rotor size. And making a tower higher gets you above turbulence for better performance and substially increased power output. Putting a wind turbine on a short tower is like mounting solar panels in the shade!

Before you jump into building your own wind turbine or buying a commercial one, do your homework! There are certain things that work and certain things that don’t, and you can save hours and dollars by learning from other people’s successes and mistakes. Some recommended reading:

  • Our book Homebrew Wind Power covers everything you need to know about the physics behind turning moving air into electricity, and includes detailed, step-by-step illustrated instructions on how to build a 10-foot diameter, 1 kilowatt turbine. And much more, including controls, wiring, towers, and troubleshooting.
  • Our article The Bottom Line About Wind Turbines is an essential introduction to wind power. It covers the basics of how wind comes to us, how much power different size wind turbines can make in different wind regimes, and has a very handy section on detecting wind turbine scams.

My Note –

I found a site that had a build your own generator a while back – something like a home garage project. Will find it again and post it later . . .

It looks like the states and non-profits, cities and counties are good places to look for business grants, as well as specific industry groups. I’m going to look around for those also. I wonder how much could be raised with a business that is built from the ground up with green – ecologically friendly practices from the get-go. Might be interesting to find out.

Good Living is to stand where the trees filled with bright green leaves sparkling in the sunlight bow over a gently gurgling creek with its waters singing from little waterfalls and swirls over round glistening moss-covered rocks. It is to put a hand into the cool water and find a pretty rock or two and put the wet sparkling treasures into a pocket to discover later at home. It is to stand with pants rolled up in the bubbling swirls to feel rocks underfoot and waterfall spray under the canopy of arching branches and leaves that spreads out as far up the stream as the eye can see.

That is good living. It doesn’t cost much, doesn’t pay any bills, isn’t harnessed for anything except the sheer joy of the moment, but it nourishes the soul and complements the mind. It is a moment of time stopped from today and tomorrow and yesterday. Long before now, the creek has flowed and long after today, it will continue. The trees will sparkle with rays of the sun casting long strands of light through the branches and the new spring leaves will be the most marvelous colors of every green and yellow-green that exists. The spray of the creek’s falls will be cool on the skin, a gentle breeze will flow through the canopy and the beautiful water-polished rocks will sit on the creek bed highlighting their colors beneath the moving water.

Skipping rocks across a still pool a little ways from the drifting water, watching for crawdads and water snakes, finding rose quartz and rubies under the water on the creek bed and sunning on a flat rock that has been smoothed by the water over hundreds of years, are exceptional special moments to carry back into a hustled modern world of streets and buildings and buzzing activity.

In Japan, there are beautiful gardens with water features because of the soothing effects to the spirit and in many homes of the Middle East, there are fountains, pools and gently moving water channels in a central courtyard of the home for its spiritually nourishing qualities. There are sounds of water which cannot be acquired any other way but by its fall and splash with the echo of it against rocks or marble basin.

This sound sings to the soul of every human being. It calls to the life of living, it nourishes and forebears, it completes and awakens, it soothes and calms while restoring thoughts to a flow of focus and breadth at the same time. It is amazing and even the memory of it can do the same thing, filling the mind with wonder again and with a child-like delight at the world in its newness and potential, calming and awakening the mind to consider the possibilities with openness and the willingness to contemplate challenge.
