1. Econ Dev Corp loans are high interest 8%-12% when Fed rates have been 0% for four years and they charge another percentage for initiation
2. All other resources available are contingent on both a credit score over 600 and sufficient credit plus collateral when their charter says these are for disadvantaged, not credit-worthy applicants
3. It creates a barrier to entry into the business startup arena for disadvantaged, minority and women-owned businesses rather than a barrier removal
4. No other grants, incentives, non-profit foundation backing, mentorship, or other resources are available if the loan packages aren’t approved.
5. They are literally given our tax money to do these loans and are breaking the charter under which these moneys are given to them by engaging in these practices.
The government funds business development corporations with the mission to provide low-interest financial products and help to people wanting to start a business or expand a business. Tax money makes up nearly all the funds these for-profit and non-profit organizations have to lend. They have the money based on helping people, women-owned businesses, minority owned businesses and under-served communities to have access to low-interest loans even with little, low, no or bad credit ratings.
Those conditions are NOT being honored. Most in NYC are requiring a credit score of 600 to even be considered, Accion accepts no less than 587, and many, if not all – won’t even consider helping with loans, grants or startup incentives for a business where there is insufficient credit.
That isn’t all. The Fed Rate is at 0% for its lending rate, recently having been raised slightly by .01% – and most banks offer more attractive rates than any of these supposedly “low interest rates” which currently are 8% – 12%. Over the last four years, as the Fed rate has been at 0% – none of these economic development loan groups and other startup resources set up with money from our government to help start small businesses have changed their percentage rates for interest to reflect the new reality. At 12%, there is nearly no way to consider these as low interest loans. Banks, bonds and other types of financial products are charging somewhere around 4% and less, but not the corporations designed to help start the under-served, disadvantaged communities with startup and operating capital.
So, not only could I personally never get a loan to startup a business and consequently will have to remain on welfare for the remainder of my life, as well as my grown children and their toddlers being on welfare to not be homeless, because we have insufficient credit and less than stellar credit, but even if we were to get those loans, they would eat up any company profits before ever seeing them. It isn’t only not fair, it isn’t right and it is far from legal for them to withhold these resources from us given their mission and the charter under which they are founded in order to operate..
We are qualified to start, run and accomplish the business we have set out to do. The community will have an asset for us doing it rather than the liability they currently have with all of our households running amuck in poverty and near homelessness with our only access to economic resources being welfare and welfare assisted programs and low paying jobs that don’t pay the rent.
The damage to us is obvious and I guarantee that if these funding opportunities were denied to us, they have been also denied to thousands of women and minority startup businesses. We could have qualified for several state and federal incentive programs by employing all of us at a viable business rather than continuing on public assistance, our communities could have been enhanced by the business we have designed, and the opportunities for three generations of our family, including my young grandchildren could have risen from poverty and welfare to entrepreneurship and equality of opportunities.
And, worst of all, I know that these companies, corporations and quasi-public/private development corporations were given our tax money and my community’s tax moneys in order to help us and people like us to start a business and to get it on a firm footing to be competitive from the outset with true low-interest, non credit rating dependent products, incentives and opportunities. That makes what they are doing, both illegal and in complete disregard of the policies which formed the foundations of their operations at every point in the process.
They have cheated me and my daughters this week and countless thousands of others like us who would’ve most certainly been summarily refused as well, along with stealing from those who they did loan money at interest rates which are four times higher than the national average for a mortgage or other loan product.
They should all be responsible for correcting that fact from the point the Fed rate was lowered to zero for every single business and business owner that was impacted by it and they certainly all have been. This is inexcusable.
And, considering that these financial business loan companies have the mandate to provide credit and loan products to economically disadvantaged and under-served populations, and those with credit scores less than stellar in order for them and us to build businesses – and they are, in fact, not doing it that way – this matter needs to be turned over to the Justice Department for consideration. It is fraudulent for their charters and rights to free access to our state treasuries’ moneys and our national federal dollars to state it is to promote one thing when they are refusing to do that as a matter of practice.
By the way, two other practices being used by these companies are also illegal and against the policy law providing for their charters – one is that they nearly all require collateral such as home equity in order to secure the loans, which means they may as well be a bank rather than what they are supposed to be and, second is that they nearly all require very short repayment schemes and many require at least a year in operation with records to show the business’ activities – even for startups who would simply not have that, but “it is their policy.”
These practices effectively removes the startup businesses from consideration for any of their loans, incentives, grants through their organization and any access to the multitude of other funding and information / mentorship resources in the community that have been put into their hands to help small, minority-owned, women-owned, under-served, economically and otherwise disadvantaged populations – owned businesses startup, expand, grow and succeed. (and be competitive against much better funded competitors across a global marketplace.)
Please fix this immediately – the national, regional and local economies need these small businesses and equal opportunities to employment, to jobs and to create businesses that can provide employment. This can’t be left as they’ve decided to manage and do this. It is unlawful, damaging to our communities and individually, barrier sustaining rather than removing those barriers to credit products to startup businesses and equal opportunities to fund those businesses appropriately.
These things represent unfair trade practices and are fraudulent to be portrayed as any real access to capital and resources for startups in disadvantaged communities or to disadvantaged populations, including women, and minorities. It is a form of loan sharking and completes a fully funded barrier to those populations for starting a business, in fact. The other incentives, resources, grants and access to programs to help the startup business under these policies are all contingent on the applicants being accepted for their credit products or otherwise – none of these other things are available either. It is completely and significantly a barrier to economic opportunities and equality to access them.
And yes, it is four times higher in interest rates than for traditional banking products, bonds and other commercial financial products because these companies are charging loan initiation fees of 1% on top of all that which is thoroughly illegal and represents nothing but the same loan sharking process that got our nation into this mess in the first place.
When she heard someone was giving away backpacks full of food and other supplies at the Westminster dog park on Saturday, she was among the first to show up.The sturdy black backpacks, which volunteers from the Giving Spirit like to call “survival kits,” contain about three dozen items essential to surviving the streets in Los Angeles County, including a baseball cap, socks, soap, sunglasses, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a hairbrush, sunscreen, lotion, a first aid kit, deodorant and bottled water.
About 225 volunteers packed and distributed 350 backpacks on foot in Venice, downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, North Hollywood and Culver City on Saturday. They delivered about 650 additional backpacks to seven local homeless outreach groups.
Volunteers made a special effort to reach women and children, distributing about 15 diaper bags full of feminine napkins, sippy cups, diapers, diaper-rash cream, baby wipes, baby sun block, children’s vitamins, formula and bottles. In Venice they partnered with Stand Up For Kids, a Los Angeles nonprofit that serves homeless youth. (etc.)
My Note –
This makes good sense and is a good start. It is humane, it is decent, it is caring and has been using sensible thinking about the things to include that would actually be of help to people, especially women and children, teens and teen girls that are homeless.
Yes, it is a good start.
Note – now is the time to start donating fans and small air conditioners to city homeless shelters, to elderly community centers, to city resource points for people in the community who are in need – and will be in dire straits this summer.
These fans can be given to the people who need them through community emergency resource centers and family social service agencies, senior community centers and homeless resource centers.
This is especially important in big cities like New York, Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, and other places where every summer, the elderly and working poor are found with heat stroke in their apartments and homes that don’t have any air circulation nor air conditioning.
Nearly every city and state has cut the funds to the poor, elderly, disabled, homeless program and other things that can help families, children, single mothers and pregnant women, toddlers, babies and the most vulnerable in our society. This is the time to help make up some of the difference. If your church is giving to a central pool fund with other churches, someone needs to check and make sure that money is actually getting into the community and not into the pockets of CEOs, stock fund portfolios for the group, think tanks and other similar administrative “discretionary choices.
American taxpayer dollars, brutal dictatorships supported by US and International money, cricketdiane, Egypt, Gaddafi, Human Rights, Libya, Mubarak, Qaddafi, united nations, US foreign aid, US foreign military aid
As I was responding to this question, it was obvious that it would make a better post where I can expand it a bit with more links –
It is about what people can do to stop the flow of funds to Mubarak and Qaddafi (Gaddafi), find their hidden assets and wealth, what to do with the information once it is found and what American taxpayers can do to stop brutal, vicious dictators like them from being supported with American taxpayer money –
This is the question from Michelle that I had been answering –

Specific to Mr. Qaddafi and his sons – their financial wealth is being located and frozen. However, since the Qaddafi regime is still in place and intends to continue in the style to which they have become accustomed, there are actually some things that US citizens can do about that.
First, make sure that there is nowhere on this planet that doesn’t know what kind of human beings they are.
Second, make sure that the wealthy who have hosted them, fawned over them, treated them like gods, and partied with them understand that none of us think that is okay nor acceptable.
Third, let our government leaders know that trading off our principles in order to do business with those insatiably cruel, malicious regimes is unacceptable and that our tax dollars are not to be used to support any such thing.
And, fourth – make sure that the strength of our conviction about it is heard everywhere around the world including at the tables of the IMF, at the World Bank, at the European Parliament, at the tables of the United Kingdom leadership, at the United Nations, at the policy-making foundations and organizations throughout the US and around the world, at the treasuries of every national decision-making body and at the NGOs, Industries, Corporations, Businesses and Political Parties that have in the past, supported them. It is not “kind of okay.” It is not okay at all.
If there is anything that you find online about the Qaddafi regime, the Libya Investment Authority, the Qaddafi sons and their shenanigans or where they have met with anyone in the past – and you stumble over it while looking at something online in the news or in some investors’ information, or looking at some public relations or consulting firm or Wall Street firm that has bragged about it in the past – then ship it over to the UN Secretariat with the link and to the US State Department. It only takes a few minutes to do that and then if it is something they haven’t known already, they can find those resources and take charge of them for the Libyan people. The same thing is true for the Mabarak fortune which is still being tracked around the world. These things are simple enough.
It is time to say that we aren’t going to put up with it anymore.
And, if you find any photos online of Qaddafi and his regime members, family members, sons and daughter being worshiped by our business leaders, our political leaders, our industry members, our corporate CEOs, our wealthiest and powerful, our political party members – then publicly share those and the links where they can be found. If you find evidence in written materials from the past, and photos of the brutality, cruelties and torture of these regimes, publish it, forward it, blog about it and tell others where the information can be found.
The ICC and UN Secretariat among other international groups, including Interpol are working to locate some of these things and keeping them current information rather than lost in something from 1986 somewhere – will be helpful when they start to look for it as they build these cases against this brutality.
I had originally started with this part – in response to Michelle – (and turned it around when posting it here) –
The first thing American taxpayers can do is to say something. When our money goes to put sophisticated military hardware in the hands of the brutal regimes around the world that are known to be psychotic, authoritarian, abusive, torturing their own people, sponsoring terrorism around the world and denying basic universal human rights to their people, then the people of the world believe that we, as Americans are supporting those horrors in their lives and in their nation.
Saying something about it to our legislators, to the public, to fellow citizens, to our churches, to our NGOs, to our State Department, to our President, to our family members and to our communities of friends is first.
The second thing Americans can do is to tell legislators on the appropriations committee when those appropriations are being made and send emails or make phone calls to the Congressional and Senate members on the foreign relations and appropriations committees as well as the government oversight committee. (wait a minute and I’ll look it up.)
House of Representatives
Intelligence (Permanent Select)
Oversight and Government Reform
There are joint committees and subcommittees where these decisions are made which can be found here –
However, most of the real policy decisions are being made in the party policy-making committees at the Republican and Democratic Party using their networks of resources and through their headquarters eventually. Those policy decisions are then enacted through their Party representatives serving in the Congress, Senate or in state governments and local governments.
These policy-makers draw on information provided to them from their favored think-tanks and academics as well as from the policy-making industry which act as consultants to them all that have arisen over the years. There is actually a school or two within our universities who specialize in government and policy that are commonly consulted by both sides of these issues. And, the special interest groups, lobbyists and international serving consultant firms are also influencing the policies and the applications of those policies through their individual and collective efforts.
Overall, the staff of the Congressional and Senate offices are more likely to be involved in sorting out the varied approaches to different issues like this one which will tend to include information from other sources in the reports they provide to the Congressmen and Senators. That information can include information from the Energy Committee for instance, that may overwhelmingly support (as in the case of Libya) a trade-off in foreign policy principles in order to satisfy the desires of the petroleum industries who want to harvest the oil reserves in that country, engineering firms who want to do business there, equipment manufacturers who want their products to be used there, the Chamber of Commerce representing businesses generally and the Petroleum Institute who serves to promote the overall interests of their industry.
These reports and briefs are put together, sometimes by think-tanks and academic institutions for the legislators and the party policy-makers as well, or analyzed by the special interest groups and policy consultant firms that hover around Washington. Sometimes, these are provided in their entirety to the Congressional members and Senate offices, and sometimes (probably more often) they are offered as a bullet list focused brief with the analysis condensed and simplified with back-up charts and data which seem to support whatever position offered. Normally, these provide intellectual arguments and data to sully support for any other position at the same time intentionally swaying the reader to think in their desired terms – most are very one-sided supporting whatever position that is in their best interest.
So, the third thing that American taxpayers can do is to find these sources of policy online and discuss it with them. Let the academics, think-tanks, political party policy-makers, policy consulting firms and special interest groups understand what we want or don’t want our money to be doing. Or, to explain to these policy sources that we expect both the things to get done that need to get done while at the same time honoring those principles upon which our nation is founded. The policies set forth by legislators as well as by businesses, industries, special interest groups, and policy-makers in our political parties can be set up to do both. It appreciably gets lost in the mix if none of us are saying anything to them about it directly.
Fourth, the other thing that people can do in America is to put a stop to it entirely. We can solve problems in other ways which are allowing our nation to be put at the mercy of other nations whose brutality we don’t want to support. That means using something other than gasoline, for instance. Those political parties and specific legislators who trade off our national principles for the support of brutal dictators for any reason can be publicized for those decisions and voted out of the seat they are warming. The special interest groups and industry representatives that are supporting those kinds of trade-offs can be publicized in that light and then removed from the list of those places where our money is donated. And, if it turns out that money we are giving to one special interest group is going eventually into supporting another group whose influence intentionally supports denying our founding principles and social responsibilities – then we can publicize that fact and stop giving them our money, our churches’ money, our charitable moneys, and enter a discussion with the initial organization funneling money into another one about our concerns. And, tell others about it.
When people give to support veterans’ needs, that money should not end up going eventually into another pool of money that abrogates programs for the veterans whether it is the Tea Party, the conservatives, the Republican Party or whatever else they funneled that money to finally. Those trails can be located through their websites and tell others about it. If all else fails, and reasonable discussions are not making any difference, then suits can be filed against them to explain that money can’t be taken for one thing and then used to do exactly the opposite. For that, they are responsible in how those funds are used and where they end up going and what gets supported when the final analysis is done.
Fifth, as fun as it is as a way to meet others, supporting protests about these things if an extreme and questionable choice but certainly does feel better than sitting at a computer engaging in discussions about it with people who basically are getting paid to serve the support of whatever policy position in order to get paid for what they do.
It would probably be easier to twitter that, “this jackass just voted to support including arms sales to psycho whomever that slaughtered 43,000 people last year. pass it on.”
I don’t know.

bonds, CDOs, credit default swaps, credit derivatives, cricketdiane, Economics, Economy, EU budget crisis, financial derivatives, financial products, financing the US debt, fiscal responsibility, paying off the US debt now, Republican budget cuts, stocks, taxpayer dollars, UK budget cuts, US budget cuts, US economic crisis, US Economy, US Government
Today, there are derivatives being created and sold in the hundreds of millions of dollars in value. Today there are financial derivatives and exotic financial instruments being created (manufactured). Today stocks and bonds are being sold, traded. purchased every single minute by the the hundreds of millions of dollars in value. In total, all of it is being swapped, traded, bought, sold and manufactured as well as exported and imported across nations. I would say that in and of itself, starting now – would solve the deficit problems.
And, just as we pay taxes on milk when it is bought, there are other taxes on the suppliers which are paid, on the retailers which are paid, on the properties housing it which are paid, on the truckers that deliver, on the gas they buy to deliver it, on the farms and farmers which produce it and sell it in the first place. So, why in the world wouldn’t these tremendously expensive products being created every minute of every day not be taxed in the same way with the same sales taxes, manufacturing taxes, product taxes, VAT and ad valorem taxes, export and import duties, and state taxes?
Today, there are well over $600 Trillion in credit derivatives, not to mention the other financial products being created, bought, sold and swapped. Out of all of them – every minute of every day, there are sales of these products happening. If I can’t buy a gallon of milk or a gallon of gas without it being taxed, then why can they sell $40 million in stocks without paying sales tax?
Thanks for taking a look at it. I hope we are right. It will solve the problem immediately by simply applying the tax laws that already exist for every other product to them. Retroactively applying the law wouldn’t even be required. It would simply need to be started today, in the same way that every other product, sale, purchase, trade and property and manufactured good is taxed. They can remit those revenues to our Federal government, State governments and other nations’ governments starting today – and the problems are solved. They have accountants – they can do that.
I do want to say one other thing –
The corporations as well as the financial industries like the stock markets and hedge funds have used our infrastructure without fair support of it for long enough. We have had to hire people to inspect them, regulate them, monitor them and generally keep up with their damn shenanigans in every single industry, in every single business and corporation. We paid for the streets they use, the highways that deliver their products, for the utility systems that carry the electricity to them, the communications systems they are using including sending up and repairing the satellites that are orbiting to carry their signals.
We have provided labor, and the oversight of labor, worker safety and workplace safety, food safety so they didn’t end up getting poisoned on the things they were producing or eating. We watched over the restaurants where they eat and supplied the building materials and technology for the buildings they are using. There isn’t one part of what they are doing that tax dollars and the American public (along with its marketplace) haven’t provided. That infrastructure doesn’t come for free. We’ve paid for it – they can now put in their fair share to pay for it. And, I mean, now.
This comment was a response to a comment on my previous blog post which was written a few minutes ago.
And, I want to add this –
In the commodities markets there are speculators who are buying contracts for the purchase of later delivery on goods who are also not paying sales taxes on those physical contracts which represent a notational value in the hundreds of thousands and sometimes, millions of dollars. They don’t pay a fee to play that goes to the state, the government or the nation when they purchase them, sell them or swap them. And, they don’t pay any of various other taxes, import and export duties, either on each of those dollars being spent, traded, swapped, bought in speculative contracts on goods. Those contracts represent a product. It was manufactured. It physically exists. It has a value. It is traded. It is purchased. It is accounted. It is sold.
Therefore, it should have the same taxes applied to it that I would have to pay as a manufacturer of original goods of any kind which must be subjected to any of a number of different taxes, including sales tax, VAT if it is re-sold, state fees and taxes, federal taxes for manufacturing of goods, interstate commerce taxes – and any of a number of other business taxes as in the case of the taxes I would have to pay just to insure any of it on the insurance policies. I pay the phone taxes, the cellphone taxes, taxes on my cable bill – and these jackasses get to trade in billions of dollars in goods without being taxed on every single transaction. I do not think that will work anymore.
Our government debt and interest can be paid off right now by doing it this way, simply apply these tax structures and revenue streams required from the rest of us to the above financial instruments, speculative commodities trading and other business activities of the stock markets and derivatives.
Simple. Done. Solved.
That is – “Sol-ved.”
And immediately yields – Solvency for the US, for the States, for New York State and New York City, for Atlanta and the State of Georgia, for Texas and Ohio, and Chicago – which is in Illinois. It probably won’t do anything to help Wisconsin but they brought that mess on themselves and they need to fix it.
The national budget deficits of the UK, the European Union and every single nation of the European Union can be solved immediately this way. And, that is the goal of these entire budget cutting shenanigans, isn’t it? None of which, I might add – will actually pay off any of the debts nor even come close to paying off the interest on these debts even as they weaken the entire economy, the complete social fabric of these nations (including ours) and gut the existing infrastructure that supports them.
But, to use the plan as I’ve proposed – these budgets can be brought into solvency immediately, their debts completely paid off, the interest due now completely paid, have a healthy prudent reserve to cushion these budgets and no cuts would have to be made whatsoever – in fact, increases to education funding could be provided rather than destroying the opportunities for educating an entire three or four generations of students, children and adults.
Total Public Debt Outstanding (United States March 2011)
(and one penny.)
Plus interest compounded upon interest again compounded upon the debt.
(see chart above on how that works out over 25 years on $1,000 and amplify that times the above numbers. America won’t be in business unless we do this now by taxing fairly everything being produced and sold in America – and the UK – and in the EU – because we are intimately tied together economically and their debt influences us and our debt influences them and all of it influences me and my fellow citizens and our families.)
Now, a note to Washington and our state governments – you’ve mismanaged this mess. You fix it.
Let’s do the math –
What is 20% of $600 Trillion dollars in credit derivatives?
$120 Trillion dollars.

“The enemy of yesterday is the friend of today….It was a real war, but those brothers are free men now.” Thus spoke Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi in March 2010, referring to the leaders of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group LIFG, an armed organisation that had attempted to assassinate his father, Muammar al-Gaddafi, three times in the mid-1990’s.
This may seem surprising. A few days ago, the very same man promised Libyans a “sea of blood” if his father’s regime was toppled. Indeed, Saif al-Islam, an elegant, soft-spoken graduate of the London School of Economics, has now become a prime suspect in massive crimes against humanity.
History in the making in the Arab world

*** Omar Ashour is a lecturer in Middle East politics and director of the Middle East Graduate Studies Programme at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter. He is the author of The De-Radicalisation of Jihadists: Transforming Armed Islamist Movements.
This article is an amazing overview of what has kept Qaddafi and other brutal regimes in place at the cost of their citizens’ lives. Yes, amazing. It also states that Qaddafi’s son had tried to have him assassinated three times. This is certainly a good point to know that about him and their “family”. They are a real piece of work.
Why would the international community have ever put up with this?
The Press Association: Libya calls on UN to lift sanctions
Meanwhile, Gaddafi’s government asked the UN Security Council to suspend the sanctions it imposed against Libya a week ago, insisting that “no opposition has been raised to peaceful, unarmed demonstrators”.
From the UN Charter – (there’s more, of course – link follows it)
The Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression and shall make recommendations, or decide what measures shall be taken in accordance with Articles 41 and 42, to maintain or restore international peace and security.
In order to prevent an aggravation of the situation, the Security Council may, before making the recommendations or deciding upon the measures provided for in Article 39, call upon the parties concerned to comply with such provisional measures as it deems necessary or desirable. Such provisional measures shall be without prejudice to the rights, claims, or position of the parties concerned. The Security Council shall duly take account of failure to comply with such provisional measures.
The Security Council may decide what measures not involving the use of armed force are to be employed to give effect to its decisions, and it may call upon the Members of the United Nations to apply such measures. These may include complete or partial interruption of economic relations and of rail, sea, air, postal, telegraphic, radio, and other means of communication, and the severance of diplomatic relations.
Should the Security Council consider that measures provided for in Article 41 would be inadequate or have proved to be inadequate, it may take such action by air, sea, or land forces as may be necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security. Such action may include demonstrations, blockade, and other operations by air, sea, or land forces of Members of the United Nations.
My Note –
I’d say running through the country killing the people who live there would qualify for at the very least cutting off the jackasses’ communications.
Among other things . . .
Although this chapter doesn’t explicitly apply to Libya – it actually does –
and the intentions it covers are inherent in all the charter’s underlying foundations for its purposes –
And, Libya is not, nor has it been “self-governing” –
CHAPTER XI: DECLARATION REGARDING NON-SELF-GOVERNING TERRITORIES
Members of the United Nations which have or assume responsibilities for the administration of territories whose peoples have not yet attained a full measure of self-government recognize the principle that the interests of the inhabitants of these territories are paramount, and accept as a sacred trust the obligation to promote to the utmost, within the system of international peace and security established by the present Charter, the well-being of the inhabitants of these territories, and, to this end:
- to ensure, with due respect for the culture of the peoples concerned, their political, economic, social, and educational advancement, their just treatment, and their protection against abuses;
- to develop self-government, to take due account of the political aspirations of the peoples, and to assist them in the progressive development of their free political institutions, according to the particular circumstances of each territory and its peoples and their varying stages of advancement;
- to further international peace and security;
- to promote constructive measures of development, to encourage research, and to co-operate with one another and, when and where appropriate, with specialized international bodies with a view to the practical achievement of the social, economic, and scientific purposes set forth in this Article; and
- to transmit regularly to the Secretary-General for information purposes, subject to such limitation as security and constitutional considerations may require, statistical and other information of a technical nature relating to economic, social, and educational conditions in the territories for which they are respectively responsible other than those territories to which Chapters XII and XIII apply.
Members of the United Nations also agree that their policy in respect of the territories to which this Chapter applies, no less than in respect of their metropolitan areas, must be based on the general principle of good-neighbourliness, due account being taken of the interests and well-being of the rest of the world, in social, economic, and commercial matters.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi called for the creation of a southern hemisphere alliance mirroring the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, to counteract the influence of the U.S. and Europe.
They spoke yesterday at the second South America-Africa Summit in Venezuela, where Chavez brought together 30 heads of state including Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe and Algeria’s long-time leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
“For African countries it’s closer to visit our brothers in South America and we share the same interests of liberation and revolutionary ideals,” Qaddafi said. “Colonialism humiliated us, insulted us and robbed us of our riches.”
My Note – (as I posted on facebook a few minutes ago about this – )
[The above article] is from 2009 – as Qaddafi has been trying for a number of years to create a southern hemisphere NATO like coalition to engage equal force against what he has considered “imperialism” of the northern hemisphere nations. Now he demands that the UN sanctions be lifted despite killing thousands of unarmed protesters (who are now poorly armed with Qaddafi’s own stores of old equipment) – and continuing to have his troops drag people out of their homes to be beaten and arrested in Tripoli.
And, his friend Chavez is gathering other Latin American leaders to form a coalition backing Qaddafi to fight for a “peace process” as defined by Qaddafi and Chavez which intends no real consequences for his actions. That would not serve the people of Libya very well, not the nations of the world, nor the rest of the world’s populations that have been terrorized by this man and his evil crew of criminals and terrorists.
About the International Court – (from the UN Charter) – ChapterXIV
from the UN Charter –
This is the part in Chapter II – that Libya’s leadership defiled, defied and consummately refused to adhere to –
- Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations.
- The admission of any such state to membership in the United Nations will be effected by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
A Member of the United Nations against which preventive or enforcement action has been taken by the Security Council may be suspended from the exercise of the rights and privileges of membership by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. The exercise of these rights and privileges may be restored by the Security Council.
A Member of the United Nations which has persistently violated the Principles contained in the present Charter may be expelled from the Organization by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
Chapter II, UN Charter
Not only are there thousands of eyewitness accounts, there is also video recordings from the journalists and cameras there along with cellphone videos and evidence of the harms done, maiming and killing of the Libyan people through the facts determined by doctors who treated them and the people who buried their loved ones after being slaughtered by Qaddafi’s forces. So, it appears that the only one who does not know this is Senior Qaddafi, King of the Southern Hemisphere and all of Africa as he thinks he is.
Or, maybe he has just been hanging around with liars for too long. It probably doesn’t pay to tell him that there are people in his country that don’t like him and despise the barbarity of his wealth mongering brutality.
It was written in the information about Qaddafi’s daughter that she served as a defense attorney for Saddam Hussein. I’m not sure if that is true or not.
It is interesting though.
Qaddafi is going to stop. He’s going to stop because it is in his nature, not because he cares about Libya nor the people of Libya. He is going to stop because someone is going to be intelligent enough to stop him and to stop his regime. And, he is going to stop because his nature is human, not some invincible demigod. That being so, he will stop or be permanently defused, disarmed. and his ability to cause harm utterly destroyed.
Freedom is not a four-letter word. “Kill” is a four-letter word. That seems to be the only word Qaddafi knows to tell his people to do, not prosper, not to share the wealth of his nation with his nation’s people, his intention is to “kill” the West, “kill” what he considers imperialists, “kill” the people who disagree with him, and “kill” his nation’s future.
Why should ten people be allowed to do that?
Qaddafi and his top ten to twenty people are the only ones running this horror upon Libya, and after drawing mercenaries from Africa’s neighboring citizenry those horrors are being perpetrated upon them as well. He has drawn the entire world in this and won’t be happy until the entire Southern Hemisphere Coalition he believes he heads up is engaged in a civil war with the rest of the world. (with him at the center of it.)
That is way too much power for any one man to wield and his family has apparently never learned the word, “no,” except when they are using it. Now is time they learn what “no” means in the hands of others.
One other item from the UN site of interest particularly – (and this includes the oil companies, engineering companies and others doing business in Libya and other firms) –
It is called the Global Compact –
From their page –
What is the Global Compact?
The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
My Note –
Our international businesses have agreed to do the best they could do on these things and they know how important it is. They have sent decision-makers to learn more about it and have agreed that the costliness of not doing the right thing in these matters is far more expensive, far more unfair to their own business goals and far more unpredictable in the long run.
Business assets are put at risk, human lives are put at risk, opportunities to do business are put at risk and business investments are undermined when human rights violations are rampant, the environment destroyed and corrupt governments are let run without consequences.
I would hope that businesses will cooperate fully with the UN and world leaders as they work to support the goals of the Global Compact, the UN Charter and their underlying principles, both in Libya and elsewhere. It will make the world safer for people and better for business at the same time.
Our goals are the same. Together we can make a difference.

There is no sense in this situation coming to this – there were options which could have been done long before today.
