Some of the new designs I made today for my Zazzle store at CricketDiane and Cricket House Studios Art and Design –
This design about love – with Valentine’s Day in mind and the Women’s March on Washington, DC that is happening on January 21, 2017.
Today, using Facebook Live – I made two videos for the first time ever using Facebook and my phone. Very interesting making them and lots of fun. Not bad for a first attempt and making music as I went along. Great thanks to my friend and roommate who let me borrow the keyboards for the project – as well as letting me play them. Wowsa!
Also made this pillow with two different designs – different on the front and back with one red dragon on the front with a glowing eye and starry night sky behind him – and two red dragons on the back with glowing eyes and a night sky. The dragon in this design was rendered with pen and ink, watercolors and fiddled with after photographing it, using the Photoshop software to clean the line widths and mottle the dragon’s skin.
The glowing eyes were made in Photoshop then added specifically as a collage element on these pillows. And, the starry night sky is a glittery photograph of glitter that I rendered and changed in Photoshop to use in a different way than the original glitter. Together – these elements make a great design for this fantasy art pillow I made today on Zazzle.
The back of the pillow looks like this –

Today, I have been making tshirts for Dad on my Zazzle store. They are being thought up and designed almost simultaneously, although to be honest, I brainstormed a lot of ideas first – most of which I wouldn’t use without a bit of revision on them. These tshirts are funny and geeky – hopefully perfect for Dad to get on Father’s Day, for a birthday or as a special Christmas gift later this year.
The first one needed something – so I changed the text font on the word, Leader and put it in red to make this one – the back has the same design. It also says, Fix It team which changes in the next couple shirts.

It needed a coffee mug to go with it so I decided to make a commuter mug thinking that would be a great gift for Dad – well, for my Dad. And, maybe other people will like it too.

Then, I decided to change the words to Fixer Team and redo the font on House Run-a-Muck Fixer Team and separate it some from the word, Leader while making it larger too.
Daughter and fellow business partner came in and said it would be funnier if the word Leader was on the back with the other part about House Run-a-Muck on the front which yielded this tshirt for Dad. The back says, Team Leader in bold red letters.

So, from my brainstorming a number of ideas for words to go on Dad tshirts for Father’s Day to say #1 Dad without using those words – this one started as Mad Techno Geek which my daughter changed to read, Mad Techno Geek God and she decided on this computer tech look font. This allover print tshirt is black sleeved with black on the back that are solid and non-design surfaces – the front black background looks more grey but the words are great. So, I made another one of it after this.

The same tshirt above showing both front and back – the front doesn’t look as grey here and I chose the black background print color from the Zazzle editor instead of adding my own plain color black background art that I have on file. I suspect it will be a dark grey more like the above closeup of the shirt though.

This is the next version of the Mad Techno Geek God which I did while daughter walked up to the store – I like it.

Then, putting together two brainstorm ideas from my list, one of which was modified by my daughter to say batteries not required – yielded this tshirt for Dad – The Dad-O-Matic that requires no AA batteries. Very nifty.

About then, I made a note to make another of these tshirts that I designed a few years ago – into a new version for Father’s Day with my saying on it, Nerd by Nature – Geek by Choice. Here it is made with geeky Dads in mind because Father’s Day is soon, but this shirt is perfect for just about anyone who is geeky and should be proud of it (women included and a selection can be made from Zazzle to simply put it on any style of women’s shirt too). I like it – one of my favorites.
Then, I got to thinking about who actually buys gifts for Dad on Father’s Day, realized that kids need something nifty to give Dad too – and made this shirt on the fly right out of the top of my head. Wasn’t brainstormed first – just happened. I like it a lot. The back of the shirt says, Dad of the Best Kids. And the front says it all, Dad of the Best Kids in the World and below that slightly smaller in a different color of grey, it says (they bought me this shirt). Very nifty and funny. Daughter actually laughed when she saw this one in spite of herself – being young and so sophisticated as she is.

This was from the combination of two ideas also – and there ended up being two versions of it. On this one, the design is only on the front because I couldn’t think of what to do with the back and the second repeats the design on both sides because I liked the design better. But on this one, anyone buying it can customize the back with an added message, which is also pretty cool.

I do like this one better. Took the colon out that appeared after the word Dad, and that re-sized the text to look a lot better or rather, re-situated it visually. And then, I added – updates automatically in grey and smaller text size below it – which is funny and really fun and makes me laugh every time I see it. Love this one. Perfect for Dad too.

Well, on my list of brainstorming ideas, I had the word wireless – which is a perfect word for a tshirt and in a few minutes I’m going to make one with it. But, daughter said it could be misread – so I put Wireless and User-Friendly on this shirt, both sides. Not sure if I like the font style. Will probably change that too. The shirt is funny and it is a little bit of innuendo apparently. Maybe not risque though. I almost bet a guy would buy this shirt for himself to wear. It would be a great shirt for some occasions.

Last night, aside from a diversity tshirt that says, Diversity is Strength that I’m not including in this post, that I made – I also made these fun party sunglasses for the Fourth of July which would be a great Dad gift too. They are aviator style, but the Zazzle store allows for another style and a kid’s version too, along with various other colors for the frames. I liked the white with this Star Spangled Banner Red White And Blue USA gun-ho look. The flag design has a different look to it than simply a flat American flag which I really like about it. These are just so fun.

Also made last night by me on Zazzle – were two American flag ties. This one has a flat navy blue background and the other below it, has a navy blue starfield background. Love them both and they would make great gifts for Dad, or to wear for Fourth of July and other patriotic holidays – and to celebrate returning personnel from engagements. And, for Armed Forces Day too. They would be a great Dad gift.
The first version of the American flag tie design for this year that I did was made on a navy blue starfield background which is repeated on the front and back of the tie. It is the first of the two made last night, the second one is shown above. This tie could be worn to work as well as to holiday celebrations, election celebrations and Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans’ Day, Armed Forces Day, Armistice Day and Flag Day celebrations. And, Labor Day, but I don’t see many people interested in wearing a tie on Labor Day unless it goes with swim trunks, running shorts, or with a tshirt, running shorts and sneakers. Hey, that could be a great look!

Just had to take this moment to show off my two new versions of a Lucky Fishing Shirt for the Geeky Dad with its ray gun and the words, Lucky Fishing Shirt. The second version done yesterday or the day before – is below this one. Like this one the best, but they are both great fun and funny for the tech focused fisherman, any geek, and anyone who has thought a ray gun would’ve done better than the worm and hook that the fish are laughing at just below the surface of the water while watching you “fish”.

These two Lucky Fishing Shirts were made originally, last year or earlier this year by me, but the text was smaller. There was another few designs along the same theme that I did, but haven’t remade them yet. Will probably do that sometime today or tomorrow – I’m making a note about it now. One had a fishing thing that wasn’t a ray gun – I’ll have to go find it. I like the ray gun, but I’m a bit on the geeky side and find it really, really funny. You haven’t been fishing with me or you’d think it was really, really funny too.

This is the iPhone case that inspired the Dad’s tie above. It just looks so cool with that retro modern thing going on and I didn’t put NYC on the tie, but it sure would look good on it too. Love this particular checkerboard pattern I recently made with its very, very light yellow tint squares contrasting the steel grey squares. I just love it. And, it is so perfect on the tie and this case – what a great look! Love em.

I’m going to go make some more goodies for Dad and for gifts Dad might enjoy getting for Father’s Day. Even though there are thousands of nifty gadgets to get for Dad, when it is time to get something really special that he might wear – well, there can’t be enough to choose from as far as I’m concerned and more would be lots better. That way, something may be just perfect. And make the best rolling laughter that serves as part of the very best gift of all – good feelings and knowing you are loved.

Maybe its like plumbers whose houses have the worst plumbing of everybody because they don’t feel like fiddling with it or mechanics with their own car doors held on with duct tape rather than getting it done right. There was an ad recently talking about grandkids being built-in tech support, maybe in some families – not mine so much.
If you want me to know how to turn that damn alarm off on your device, you should’ve told me a little more about it. When i hear the thing and want it to stop, I’m left with about three things I know not to do. One, is throwing it at the wall which never ends well and has to be explained. Two, is dropping it accidentally in the toilet which does stop the alarm but same as above about having to explain how it got there. Three is to go wake up the idiot who belongs to the gadget and get them to turn it off – and everybody hates it when I do that. Well, you should’ve told me how to stop it in the first place.
Whenever I ask for tech support help, answers to dumb computer questions or just plainly and obviously don’t know how to make it do something I want it to do, and I ask for help from my younger family members, you’d think I’d have asked them to run down to the store and back five times for something we didn’t really need.
It seems to me that since they aren’t having to get up before the sun and go feed pigs, cows, chickens and milk anything, they could dial down their little shit fits about this. But, then – we don’t have cows, chickens and pigs, so they might not even get the reference. They don’t mind asking me how to get the burnt popcorn out of the pan where they’ve burnt it on there for the upmteenth time and I finally made them clean it instead of me. Nope, I’m supposed to provide that tech support right there and then no matter what else I may have been doing. It is funny, though.
Asked to explain something from computer land, and family members seem to find a reason to get up and go into the other room like they can’t be bothered with explaining it at all. One of these days, I’m going to let them figure out for themselves without any help how to do the fifteen thousand things I’m doing for them and then we’ll talk about the value of tech support and sharing information.

How To Paint Ocean Waves 3 –
By Cricket Diane C. Phillips
Do you remember standing still at the ocean trying to capture every sound and every nuance of light and color dancing on the waves?
Can you feel the spray that lightly touched your face when you walked in the shallow surf where the waves were bouncing with foam nearby?
Have you thought about the feelings of what you were seeing when the ocean waves pulled into the sand near you and tugged their way back out again?
Are you reminded of the vastness of the ocean as you had looked at the horizon with its light haze and depth of surface color in the sea?
When you remember what it was like at the ocean – can you recall its colors, its feeling, the color of the sky and the ways it changed moment by moment?
These are the things you need to know in order to paint ocean waves and capture the feeling of the scenes you remember. The ideas of time and change are all in you – they are in your memories and you can recall them. Every moment at the sea, there is change – there is motion – there is a feeling, an essence and an idea that is captured in your memories. It isn’t only what you felt at the time, or your thoughts, or what was happening in your life at that time. There is something of the sea and the ocean’s spirit and power that is there too.
Sometimes, when I create – there is nothing but a request to my mind for a memory, a feeling or an essence of a time at the ocean. There is a sunset that comes to my mind with a looming storm beyond the horizon whose clouds are catching the last rays of the sun in brilliant colors against a lavender sky. There is a time when I was afraid to stand on the shore because the power of the waves crashing into the sand were so much greater than me and the winds drove the salty spray of the waves into my skin stinging as it came. But the colors – ooh the colors of that moment drove me to distraction to understand their shades and hues and subtleties. The sand felt different, the sea felt distant, though I stood right beside her, and the sky was filled with unusual textures and colors that I would love to describe in paint.
There are intricacies to painting which are like nothing else because from the mind of the artist directly to the mind of the viewer there is no boundary – no wall – no caption or remark to make. It is a direct route of communication without limitation in an immediate, encompassing sense. The best way to describe this is for you to choose a moment to capture in paint, let go of all your pre-conceived notions of how to go about it, let go and paint it. Make it so. Let the paint describe all of what you saw, all of what you experienced and all of what you felt in that moment. Push all the judgements about how it should be done or how it should look – out of your mind and let the paint be an extension of what you know. Then let someone see it and see what they see. There is nothing you can say that will add to their experience with it. The moment they have seen it, something has passed between your mind and theirs directly. Infinitely, genuinely and honestly – they have been given some part of that experience as you remembered it. If you want words for what they have seen – ask them, but often words fail to accurately describe experiences like this and many people fall back on whether they like it or not and try to get you to talk more about it.
Do you remember the sky, the day you stood at the ocean on a summer day? Can you feel the warmth of the sand under your feet and the clean smell of the gentle breeze that brought the sounds of people drifting on it?
Did you ever walk on the beach at night or wade in the water as the sun was sinking below the horizon? Do you remember the sparkly little foam that you kicked halfway across to the moon as you walked in the cool water with the wet sand tugging under your feet at each step? Can you recall what the sky looked like as the moon and stars lit the sea like thousands of tiny diamonds bobbing up and down with each little crest of a wave?
There are thousands of moments in each day and as we stand in the realm of the ocean’s power – her force is evident in seemingly infinite changes within each of those moments to everything surrounding her. The sky isn’t the same from one moment to the next – the colors fade toward the horizon one moment and some other time – the hue is deeper there. The foam on the sand ebbs and flows with the surf, but the reflections in it are never the same. Wet sand, dry sand are definitely different colors – yet, warm sand is many shades and cold sand seems grey whether it is or not.
Set up a horizon on the surface to paint.
Remember a moment to capture.
Define the sky with colors, swirls, textures, clouds and reflected light.
Play in the paint to achieve effects that describe details to include.
Stop touching it – the moment any part of it looks right.
Don’t fix it. Just do another one and each one will get better.
Enhance waves, shadows, contours and specific elements carefully – because it will change what you already have right.
And, last of all – remember – it is perfect because you did it this way today, this time and in capturing this one moment this way. Let it go and do another one.

Cricket D. Says – “Grow a Green Thing – Save The Sea”
If everyone plants as many leafy plants as they can inside and out – we could save our oceans.
Plants are the original nano-material for converting carbon dioxide into oxygen and safe, usable nutrients.
We may not be able to put back trees as fast as they are being torn down in our communities – but we can make a difference by planting as many green things as we can – hostas, ferns, flowers, evergreens, vines like philodendrons, morning glories and ivys, vegies and treelings.
Plant five Green Things a week in your yard. If we all do that throughout the summer and fall across America, we can start lowering the carbon dioxide levels that are affecting our oceans. It will improve our air quality, too.
Add plants indoors, on porches, in windows, and in offices and businesses, too. It could buy the time our scientists, inventors and engineers need to implement the green solutions they’ve created.
Clip your plants and start new ones from them. Plant seeds and nursery seedlings. Add mulch for fertilizer. Plant roses and shrubs. Divide plants and make two or three from each. Its easy and fun. Children might help but its time for the grown-ups to lead the way.
Grow a Green Thing (or two) and Save The Seas.
