Last night, as I was on snow patrol watching the storm Nemo unfold around us by running to the door and looking outside, popping over to the Weather Channel and CNN occasionally to see what it was doing everywhere and trying to get a look out of windows on each side of the apartment to see it, I stayed up until well after the sun had come up.

During that time, while it was quiet here, I created a bunch of calendar tools that are color coded as I use them – over on the zazzle store with the adaptive living tools.

That was actually pretty nifty. Because I don’t have the money to get photoshop, even though I have had it in the past and know a great deal about how to use it – I’ve been having to use the editor on the zazzle site and one image viewer program that has a few functions available with it for modifying images.

Days of the Week Friday Color Coded Calendar Visual Tools for Adaptive Living by CricketDiane 2013 – This is a cling decal to use on the wall and enter info for Friday using dry erase and other specialized markers that hopefully will work on it. Can also be used with magnets, stickers and other indicators for visual calendar information if the decal is placed on the fridge or other metal based surface, though it works to cling on walls and doors as well.

Occasionally, I also use the mousepaint program that comes with windows – which I know nobody uses hardly anymore, but at least it allows me to make a few changes to things in images or to make circles and squares of color for something. In the past, I’ve used photoshop far more than mousepaint or an online editor that is part of something else, and it really changes what ends up coming from it.

This was especially true for the calendar which I was trying to make on a poster last night and finally gave up. On other things I was designing last night, the editor on zazzle worked well, but because of its differences from the ways I know to do things had it been photoshop – some products were affected by being different than my concept for them.

That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing though and it did yield some very useful calendar color coded tools which wouldn’t have existed had it not been for that snafu. Very interesting in that it reminds me of how much the electronic and software tools I use can force certain designs and concepts into specific directions that are vastly different than what I would have done given a technical pen, a ruler and some markers.

The range of products I designed last night for the adaptive living tools store are based on the color coding system that I have been using for the calendar and days of the week. In the way I use them, very contrasting colors are used for each day such that Monday represented by Hot Pink – has Green next to it for Tuesday – Wednesday has a high visibility sunny yellow – Thursday uses sky blue – Friday – orange. By doing it this way, the colors are obviously and extremely different than the day before it or after it on a calendar – which makes it easier for me to use them and identify them as separate spaces being represented on the calendar (or on other things.)
