Skateboard I designed today – I had been doing the visual identifiers for awhile and then decided to take a break and make something more fun to design. The skateboards are fun to design because each time it is an exploration of what the design can become. I build the designs as they progress, so with each stage there is a slightly different look and then suddenly it is completely something else at a point. I love that about it.
The cases for electronics are like that to a point, and I’ve designed some of the tshirts with these extreme designs but they are much harder and not near as much fun to design as the skateboards. I think that if some of the designs from the skateboards were re-worked for the tshirts, it might be interesting. Strangely enough, the very first time a design is being created, it is magnificent to be doing it mostly – (except when trying to move something just one pixel so it will match or something like that.) When the design is being re-done to put on something else, the process doesn’t have the same feelings of creating and it is much harder in a way because of that.
One thing that has really been enjoyable, has been to be able to post the designs on the blog and on twitter as they are being done in real time. It is like having people in the studio with me or at the drafting table – rather than far removed from the process when it is being done. In many things, the creative part of the process occurs and then days, weeks or months later, people see it in some version which is far from the point when it was fresh and new to the person creating it, (and in this case, that is me.) I don’t know that it would be very good to do the process with a video camera running or live streaming the process – but I’m thinking it might be interesting. And, it might be as much fun for the viewer as watching grass grow – not sure about that.
When something is being created that I am working to do, there are points in the process where I can see something is starting to look very nifty – but have not one word that could describe how that is, or exactly what it is starting to do – I can see it though and it is exciting to me because it is part of the thing becoming what it will be . . . See – there are just no good words to describe it. How could I say that during the process while it occurs? Somebody would probably look at it at that point and say – what the hell would you possibly see in that?
It might be worth trying though – in real time. Putting the things online to social networks has been pretty nifty – although, I guess a lot of people likely feel like I’m just adding spam to their otherwise zippy day. And, maybe that’s true – I hope not but it might be. When I started working with the zazzle store, the work that I had sitting here in my computers that was mostly done by real paints on paper and canvas, then photographed and sometimes modified with the computer – were put on products. Then, probably because I got bored doing it that way, since it really wasn’t actively creating something beyond sticking it on an existing thing – I started designing directly on the computer and with the editor provided on the zazzle site – which isn’t the fanciest thing in the world, but interesting regardless. And, then by taking the photographs I had taken in NY and altering them, remixing them, playing with combinations of them with other things, it started becoming so fascinating that brand new designs were being created. So, I just had to share them as some of them were being created and to be honest, I didn’t put the majority of what was designed into the social networks, nor on my blog. It was absolutely amazing to be able to show the designs as they were just finished, though.
Anyway, I’m going to design one more and then put it here –

Just to know – this is where these designs ended up a short time later. Very complex, amazing and interesting design from the process. There were quite a few versions in-between this one and the ones above but the design was built starting from them and moving outwards and inwards from there. –
