My note –

There was a paper I read about earthquake storms that pre- whatever, (happen before big earthquakes). It is controversial but the data is very interesting.

Anyway, today I was looking at the USGS site and noticed how many small earthquakes one after another were happening in Los Angeles each of the last several days. They happened very close together, both in time and in the areas where they are occurring. So, I started looking at the others over the past week and then over the past days since 01-26-2010 to see if the clusters had been common. And they weren’t until this last week –

Anyway – here is what I found, it is interesting and I sincerely hope it doesn’t mean anything:

(These first three in Los Angeles were the only ones I found from January 26 of this year until the February 16 clusters started.)

My Note –

But then again, maybe I just feel it. Strange, and I hope the fault tensions will all settle out without jerking the city about. That paper on earthquake storms, I’ll have to find it and add it here. The work is great on it and very interesting to consider.

We really, really don’t have time to have a big earthquake in California right now.

I want to make a Google map of the recent activity from the last few days in California, especially in Los Angeles. When I looked back over the days before this last week to ten days and there was very little in the area, I thought it would be great to have a dimensional map to locate them, but short of that – I think I’ll do a Google map of them to see what is happening.  That’s what I get for double checking the USGS site after getting off there once I had finished some research on the oil industry stuff. (which is posted on the last post really poorly compared to the way I had it formatted on my document, oh well.)

California earthquake map – 02-21-2010 and week prior

This one shows how close together these recent California / Los Angeles / Southern California earthquakes have been – all the ones on the map are from 02-16 to 02-21, 2010 and 2.5 Magnitude or larger ( none are huge and they vary in depths, but they are all clustered very close and this map below shows some of the others on the USGS site are running along the faultline across the state and down through BAja). – please forgive my Google map not having all the details, I got frustrated with it and just listed the placements from the USGS site.

My Note – busy place, but I’m going to look up what kinds of things are in the canyons south of Redlands, Calif. – How are plates and slip faults connected there? What do they impact? And, what kinds of businesses are north and east of there? Why so many earthquakes of those magnitudes in that small an area within minutes of each other? A== although, I’ve noticed some areas of California have numerous clusters from the area around the Salton Sea to the Bay in San Francisco. Sure would love to make a three -dimensional or four dimensional map including time and wave velocities to see where the shear plane will be stressed enough to move. (note – I’m not a geologist, so I am communicating what is on my mind about it in the best words I have read about that describe it. I wish I knew more.)
