For the two days that it snowed in Atlanta recently, I was staying at my parents’ house and ran around taking photos of the snow. I wait every winter to have that much fun and forgot to make a snowman while it was here. But, the first night I did make one quick snow angel. Some things are too fun to not do them. I collected a bunch of snow to put in the freezer for snow icecream and ate several quart Mason jars full of snow, just because standing in the house eating snow is too fun.

What is remarkable to me, is the way different tree structures and leaves are expressed when the snow holds them. I like it. I like it a lot. To me, that is fascinating when the trees’ forms are dramatic and their structures are highlighted more sensuously. When the first leaves of spring come with their sun glistening delicate green leaves, its as if the sparkles extend across ages and eons of time. Snow does that too. It lights my mind with days of ages past in my life and beyond my life. It stretches into a future unknown and into a past I’ve only studied. It reminds me that I am mortal and frail and life is short, but it is glorious.

So, I was wanting to get up the next morning at dawn and take some pictures, but I wouldn’t have if Mom hadn’t asked me at 7:15 am to get the camera for her. I was half asleep and handed it to her and snuggled back into my covers to go back to sleep. Then somebody called, the phone jangled like an old-fashioned fire alarm bell in a fire station because my parents have the ring volume as loud as it can go. There was nobody on the phone by the time I grabbed it across the room. As much as I wanted to cuss out whose ever idea it was to put the phone ringer on loud enough to be heard in alpha centauri and really wanted to call back with a word or two for the jackass who called, the star 69 info didn’t tell me a number anything close to anybody we know, so I let it go – got dressed, grabbed my camera and went outside to take pictures. It is a wonder considering I had at least a dozen good cuss words lined up to tell the person who called at 7:29 in the morning.

Strange, but when I’m inside – the snow is prettier through the windows inside and when I’m outside, the snow is more beautiful outside. I love the quiet that happens when it snows. Cars stay home and people, other than the distant sounds of children playing with their favorite grownups outside, are rarely involved with burning leaves or running motorized grunting machines.
