U.S. Stimulus Puts Bullet Trains On the Fast Track

Florida is considering plans to build a bullet train similar to France’s Train a Grande Vitesse

Very Nifty (and good pictures, too) – my note

And, I did a search for vegetable oil conversions on Google looking for Atlanta, Georgia ones and found this which was really not in Georgia but has great info. They seem to be offering the conversion kits (located up North.)

The Greasecar Vegetable Oil Conversion System is an auxiliary fuel modification system that allows diesel vehicles to run on straight vegetable oil (SVO) in any climate.

Top 5 things you should know about driving on Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO)

(see below – and there is a lot of great info on this site along with conversion kits to run on vegie oil)

  1. Greasecar conversion systems are designed for use with filtered vegetable oils only.
  2. When buying a vehicle to convert make sure it’s in good condition. If you buy a lemon, it will still be a lemon after you convert it. Use our 23 point inspection checklist to help you out.
  3. Engine operating temperature plays a stronger role in proper fuel combustion than fuel temperature (general temperature guide lines are 150F+ engine temperature and 120F+ fuel temperature).
  4. Greasecar kits are ideally suited for those who do a lot of driving. The vehicle must start and stop on diesel (remember the engine needs to be warmed up and vegetable oil needs to be heated before it can be used) therefore if you drive short distances and shut off the engine before it has time to warm up, or if you drive infrequently this technology is not optimized for you.
  5. Do not underestimate the importance of proper and complete pre-filtering. The more energy and effort you put into filtering your oil the happier your car will be and the more successful you will be running on veg. Check out our article on filtering. Once you have a good system in place this process should take less than an hour per week. Please remember that newer vehicles require higher quality fuel than most older vehicles.

“Floridians voted in 2000 to build high-speed bullet train service between Miami, Tampa and Orlando. By 2004, however, then Governor Jeb Bush, who had insisted the $6 billion estimated cost would in reality top $20 billion, convinced Florida voters to drop the idea.”

http://www.inhabitat.com/2007/09/04/sony-bio-battery-runs-entirely-on-sugar/

Sony, the Japanese electronics maker announced that they have developed an experimental ‘biobattery’ powered by carbohydrates, or as it is most deliciously known, sugar. The battery presented by SONY showed the highest output ever by a battery of this kind at a very respectable 50mW of power, or about enough to power a portable MP3 player. The Bio Battery is a type of battery that uses energy sources such as carbohydrates, amino acids and other sources of enzymes and it is based on the work of Professor Kenji Kano from Kyoto University.

“For the more technologically inclined, the process works like this: Take a small container, divide it into two using a cellophane separator. On one side, add an anode (an electrode in which a positive electric current flows through to an electric device) consisting of sugar-digesting enzymes and mediator, and on the other side, a cathode (an electrode in which a positive electric current flown out of an electric device) composed of oxygen-reducing enzymes and mediator.”

“The mediators in this case are Vitamin K3 for the anode and Potassium Ferricyanide for the cathode. When sugar is added to the mix, the anode extracts the electrons and hydrogen ions. The ions travel to the cathode through the separator which then combine with the oxygen to produce water. It is this process which generated the electricity to power the device.”

My Note –

With all the nifty stuff that is created – why do we not ever see 97% of it ever reach the marketplace? Is there some reason why it takes 5 – 7 years for the technology to be applied into useful products in this day and age?
