When I was growing up, everything that could be learned and mastered was a forever enhancing, building process with each thing opening a vast array of new things to explore, to develop, to ponder and to utilize on every sort of problem-solving, innovating and inventing. It answers the question of why I do it and why I consider it important. But, more importantly is something I’ve noticed over the years. When people get around me (of any age from 2 years old to 90 and everywhere in between) and they see it done that way, and start doing it that way, too – it is wondrous, nourishing to the spirit and amazing in what it can do for their everyday lives. It is far more than an entertainment or something to pass the time. It is the one thing that can never be taken away and always, always improves the chances of doing anything and everything else.

Some things in everyday modern life are genuinely mind-numbing, spirit killing and annoying as hell. There is a definite need for the things that nourish the spirit in a way that is not escapism into some fictional tv, movie, game or book novel landscape. That is one way to do something to change the level of nonsense about it all – but that is all it does. When creativity and other intellectual, inventive and curiosity based pursuits are explored it is something different that happens and it is not only nourishing to the mind and spirit but it expands and amplifies throughout everything else in the day’s activities and into the next day and the next. It amplifies the positive results that can be gained from doing anything and increases the likelihood of successful problem-solving with some degree of intelligent application and common sense in everything throughout a person’s activities.

Maybe that isn’t the common way to look at it anymore, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Why would people believe they could save those three brain cells by not using them anyway? What are they thinking will happen when they don’t expand their capacities for learning, thinking, exploring, inventing and mastering skills? Do they really believe those three brain cells will be there somewhere on standby waiting for them to use for remembering what kind of shoes someone wore to the Grammy’s so they can buy a pair just like that? Does that really work? Maybe, but that is not what I’ve noticed that happens. It seems more like the less thinking done, the less capacity for using that thinking happens even when it is necessary and absolutely life-threateningly critical to do so.

I don’t know – maybe its just me. But, it looks like the rest of the world are kicking our butts in both technology and technology skills / higher education / building new technology businesses and in adopting new technologies generally. Every politician’s, business leader’s, industries’, and national leaders’ websites, writings, speeches, focus, talking points and policies are aimed at fixing that very thing or so it seems to me visiting them online and reading the damn bunch of it. Apparently, they and I are about the only ones who think its a problem needing a solution, however – (well, accept for some academics and scientists, engineers & statisticians.) Try telling it to the regular everyday people around America busily leading their lives just fine, thank you very much – without any of these things having anything at all whatsoever to do with them.

Yes, I am a little annoyed with it.

Someday, maybe I’ll find someplace else to live besides finding myself in places where they either have no use for inventing, creating businesses, innovating or doing more with what they have – or simply have no place for anyone else to have any access to any resources in their personal playgrounds available to do it.

America is going to keep on being this way about it in community after community across this country until there won’t be anything left to do except buy from elsewhere for every last thing we need – and I don’t know whose money we’ll be using at that point, because without restoring our economy to health and I mean, real health, not pretend balance books – guess what happens . . .
