Disposable microfluidic devices created using regular wax paper

The Purdue process starts with a strip of ordinary wax or parchment paper, such as that used for cooking. Once the laser burns away the wax in precise lines, dots and patterns, the underlying base hydrophilic paper is exposed. Silica microparticles are also placed in key locations, to help draw the liquid through the channels.

As with conventional paper strip tests, the liquid is ultimately drawn to a reagent, which will cause the paper to change color if a specific chemical is present in the liquid. Utilizing the microchannels, different parts of the paper strip could be used to test for different chemicals within the same sample.

Breakthrough promises $1.50 per gallon synthetic gasoline with no carbon emissions

Breakthrough promises $1.50 per gallon synthetic gasoline with no carbon emissions.

UK-based Cella Energy has developed a synthetic fuel that could lead to US$1.50 per gallon gasoline. Apart from promising a future transportation fuel with a stable price regardless of oil prices, the fuel is hydrogen based and produces no carbon emissions when burned.

Early indications are that the fuel can be used in existing internal combustion engined vehicles without engine modification.

According to Stephen Voller CEO at Cella Energy, the technology was developed using advanced materials science, taking high energy materials and encapsulating them using a nanostructuring technique called coaxial electrospraying.

(etc.)

See  -  it can be done.

Already designed, it works, can be mass produced effectively and economically, appropriate for delivery and works in existing internal combustion engines . . .

Plea Deal Rejected In Child’s Bridge Death – Baltimore News Story – WBAL Baltimore

Nelson is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse. He told police he threw his son, Turner Nelson, off the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River in February 2008. The boy’s body was found five months later.

According to court documents, Nelson killed his son in the midst of an argument with the boy’s mother about an exchange of custody, then tried to commit suicide.

Court documents showed that Nelson called the boy’s mother several times and threatened to kill Turner. But during an interview with police, he said demons told him to do it.

My Note -

This article includes a picture of this beautiful child and his mother. There was no reason for this to happen to either of them. Yeah, Baltimore and Maryland leadership have done a bang em up job of leadership, when this is the America we have to show for it.

Here is another article about it -

Man gets 50 years for throwing 3-year-old son off Key Bridge

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bs-md-nelson-sentencing-20110128,0,7222772.story

The defendant attempted to commit suicide by drinking cleaning products upon returning home that night. After he recovered, Nelson told police that demons made him throw Turner off the bridge on Super Bowl Sunday in 2008. A clinical psychologist called as a defense witness testified that Nelson had depression and had hallucinations as a result of alcohol withdrawal.

But Julie Drake, the state’s attorney’s office’s felony family violence division chief, described the crime as a vengeful act intended to cause pain to Turner’s mother, Natisha Johnson, with whom Turner had disputes over visitation and child support. Drake said Nelson had not spoken of seeing demons before this incident.

“I’m really grateful the judge saw through all this nonsense,” Drake said. As part of their agreement, Nelson’s attorneys agreed to withdraw a plea of not criminally responsible.

When the men in our society are like this and have been this way for years upon years throughout our nation, our leadership has been like it has been for forty years of Republican led Federal administrations, with most states run by conservatives and Republicans and conservative Republicans and right wing thinking for nearly the same period of time – what has been the real results?

They are the ones who have been in power and had things the way they wanted them to be for all this time – so what are the results?

These things didn’t happen because of President Obama -

The posts I made tonight are only a few of the multitude of similar news stories and they are not things that happened because of the policies that have been mine to put in place . . .

- it hasn’t been my ideas that were used, nor have most of the President’s ideas been used for that matter. Who has been holding the power in this country for all this time? Whose ideas have been beat into people’s heads at every turn twenty-four hours a day from every loudmouthed radio show spouting hate based right wing crap?

The conservatives who have been running this nation for the last forty years from the Nixon / Ford / Goldwater / Reagan / Bush Sr / Bush Jr. and Moral Majority bunch have yielded this America we have now – bankrupted, devastated, robbed of damn near everything, lost, horrific and looking more like a third world country than a great nation in just about every city, town, township, state, county, community and neighborhood in the nation . . .

They backed horrific dictators around the world.

They backed taking our dollars and our businesses out of our nation and literally gave our national assets away.

They literally used the communist workers around the world to get their profits while taking our dollars and leaving us homeless to do it.

And, they’ve literally bankrupted our nation and damn near every single state, city and county in the nation.

And, still they get paid to do it again?

And do more of the same thing to us because they “said” they did something else, regardless of what the facts say?

Hmmmm………..

Now, that is crazy.

‘Minutemen’ Vigilante on Trial in Deadly Arizona Home Invasion – ABC News

“Not only will the state prove to you that Shawna Forde was in that house that night, barking orders and telling people what to do,” prosecutor Johnson said. “The state will prove that Shawna Forde organized and planned this event with other folks.”Johnson said a cell phone believed to belong to Forde contained text messages that implicate her in the invasion. She also said police recovered from Forde several items of Gonzalez’s personal jewelry, including her wedding ring, during a search after her arrest.

via ‘Minutemen’ Vigilante on Trial in Deadly Arizona Home Invasion – ABC News.

She took the stand this week, giving emotional testimony that identified one of the three suspects as Shawna Forde, the founder of Minutemen American Defense.

“He’s all out of bullets by then because he used them on me and Junior,” she said of one of the alleged gunmen who had shot and killed her husband, Raul “Junior” Flores, 29, before turning the barrel on their crying daughter, Brisenia. “He stands there and he loads the gun right in front of her.”

“And is this something you can see happening?” Deputy Pima County Attorney Kellie Johnson asked.

“I just hear her telling him, ‘Please don’t shoot me, please don’t shoot me.’” Then, Brisenia was shot in the head. (She was 10 years old.)

There is nothing right about the Minutemen group and their right wing ideas about things. The yield is nothing good.

Lesbian Teens Sue Over Champlin Park Pep Fest  | KSTP TV – Minneapolis and St. Paul

Anoka-Hennepin has been in the spotlight before for its handling of issues involving gay and lesbian students. Six students have committed suicide in the district since the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, and advocacy groups have linked some of the deaths to the bullying of gay students.

via Lesbian Teens Sue Over Champlin Park Pep Fest  | KSTP TV – Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Sam Wolfe, a lawyer for the Southern Poverty Law Center, said that wasn’t good enough. “The intent is really clear,” he said. “The district does not want the same-sex couple walking in together.”

But, the lawsuit said, walking into together was precisely why Shelton and Lindstrom campaigned to be elected by their peers in the first place. “Their intention was to make a political and public statement about gender roles” and lesbian and gay students, the lawsuit said.

Wolfe noted Shelton and Lindstrom were selected by their fellow students, suggesting the student body may be more comfortable with the teens’ sexual orientation than administrators believe.

***

My Note -

So, rather than modeling tolerance and respect for the differences of others, respect for others and letting these two girls walk together for what might amount to all of ten minutes – the school officials decided to make these good student’s lives into a living hell -

which apparently has been the same way things have been handled already, allowing cruelties, bullying and brutality to be imposed upon gay and lesbian students to the extent that 6 of them in this school year have already committed suicide. And, if that is wrong with this school – then probably, every geek has been mercilessly bullied, everyone with any difference from the conservative “norms” have likely been mercilessly bullied and subjected to cruelties and likely an extreme measure of bullying is common there.

Those school officials are not doing a very good job teaching, protecting nor honoring the principles of our national heritage when they do things that way. There is no democracy, teaching of responsibility and freedom, honor and respect being taught when things are done that way.

What could have been a ten minute walk with two girls accepting the honors for which the student body voted to grant them – has become a hellish nightmare at the hands of school administrators, instead. Why do they do that, if not at the insistence and persuasion of conservative, right wing, intolerant, bigoted, and Christian groups that the school administrators either belong to personally, know or are listening to?

Why would the school system officials get to do that to anyone?

Former Wayne Township Schools Superintendent Terry Thompson is negotiating an early resignation from his $1,352-a-day job as “superintendent emeritus,” an attorney for the Westside school district said Friday.

The five-month position, considered unusual if not unprecedented among Indiana school administrators, was part of a $1 million retirement package that has drawn protest from township School Board members — even though most of them voted to approve it four years ago.

Like other districts in this time of reduced revenues, Wayne — which has more than 15,700 students — has had to eliminate some programs, freeze administrators’ pay and reduce teaching positions through attrition.

Republicans cut education budgets but spend, spend, spend wherever and whenever it is their friends

That parting of ways is just one aspect of fallout in the district since community members learned the magnitude of the retirement package to which the district had committed itself — more than $817,000 in lump sum severance payouts paid when Thompson retired last months along with other perks.

Wonder who is running things in Indiana?

Mitchell Elias “Mitch” Daniels, Jr., (born April 7, 1949) is the 49th and current Governor of the U.S. state of Indiana. A Republican, he began his first four-year term as Indiana’s 49th Governor on January 10, 2005, and was elected to his second term by an 18-point margin on November 4, 2008.

Previously, he was the Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget under George W. Bush and worked for Eli Lilly and Company. He is cited as a rising star in the Republican Party and has approval ratings hovering near 70%.[1][2][3]

Jury to deliberate in trial for 15-year-old Richmond girl’s killing – San Jose Mercury News

Jury to deliberate in trial for 15-year-old Richmond girl’s killing – San Jose Mercury News

Here is what the Republican Party has given California -

The gunmen knocked on the door before firing about a dozen shots. Chan, dressed in sleep clothes, was fatally struck in the head, while her father was shot in the ankle.

Cuong Dang, 27, is accused of orchestrating the fatal shooting of Middle College High honor student Chan Boonkeut in retaliation for his car being shot up because he believed a rival gang member lived at the residence.

***

My Note –

Most of the stories coming out of California since the Republicans have been holding the place have looked like something out of Somalia or somewhere, including the shootings, the gang violence, the police brutality, the vast poverty, the wasteland of huge numbers of bankrupted businesses, foreclosed homes, unemployed people, homeless, homeless tent cities that officials raided and closed down without ever solving any of the problems that caused them. . . .

and on and on and on . . .

That is what conservative right wing Republican policies had done to California besides leaving the state budget bankrupt and cutting damn near everything that they could in order to divert the funds into the state’s hedge fund and stock market plays (and to cover those losses.)

The same thing the new Republican leadership stuck into those Congress seats in the House are going to try to do now with the entire country – again.

- damn them for doing this to America.
