Report: Number of cars in the U.S. dropped by four million in 2009 – is America’s love affair ending? — Autoblog Green

the total number of vehicles in the overall U.S. car fleet dropped. There were 250 million cars here in 2008, and only 246 million at the end of 2009. We may have been buying fewer cars than we usually do in a year – there were around 10 million sold in 2009 – but we still got rid of 14 million units.

Financial institutions usually wait until the account is up to 90 days past due before they repossess the vehicle, he said.

But “fearing they will lose out,” some banks have pulled the plug on accounts just 30 days past due.

Nationwide, the number of vehicle repossessions hit a record of 1.8 million in 2008, up 19 percent from 2007, according to Tom Webb, chief economist for Atlanta-based Manheim, the largest car auction company in the nation.

In the first half of 2009, repossession volumes were increasing at a near double-digit rate, and have continued to inch upward in the second half of the year.

Toyota Repossession Class Action Settlement

Toyota Repossession Class Action Settlement.

Nearly 40,000 California residents who had their vehicles repossessed and sold by Toyota Motor Credit Corporation may be able to recover up to 100% of any money they paid to TMCC after their car was repossessed, thanks to a class action lawsuit settlement.

According to the class action lawsuit, after Toyota Motor Credit Corporation repossessed customers’ vehicles, it issued NOIs (“Notice of Our Plan to Sell Property”) to California customers that were legally defective. That means TMCC was not entitled to collect any money owed on what they called “deficiency balances” from customers following the repossessing and sale of their vehicles.
