Washington DC – Strange unusual events today in the USA – transformer explodes underground in DC – Falls Church, Va.

Underground transformer explodes in DC suburb

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — An underground transformer has exploded and about 250 mostly elderly residents are evacuating their apartments in suburban Washington, D.C.

My Note -

Well, that seemed odd to me – how often does a transformer explode underground and cause a fire? What could possibly even do that without an electrical surge like a lightning strike or water getting into it?

This article lists an apartment complex of elderly and disabled that had to be evacuated – isn’t it very hot today – that has to be difficult on them being foisted from their homes and frightened by the explosion too . . .

Apparently no one was injured according to the report. Still it is strange -

Iran – Iran protesters, Basij, Qud Squads and which Iranian leadership thinks the country can do without the lives of those Iranians that disagree with the rigged election results?

Iran’s Death Squads – Iran paramilitary riot police killing and beating dissidents, including children, shooting into crowds of protesters – arresting those who disagree with election results and confiscating laptops, cellphones, cameras, journalists and those who worked in election campaigns of other Iranian candidates in the recent rigged and fraudulent election . . .

Basij -

http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/world/iran/basij.htm

The Basij Resistance Force appeared to be undergoing something of a revival under the administration of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad. This could be connected with the organization’s alleged role in securing votes for Ahmadinejad during the presidential campaign and on election day. Ahmadinejad appointed Hojatoleslam Heidar Moslehi, the supreme leader’s representative to the Basij, as an adviser in mid-August 2005. But the revival — along with changes in the paramilitary organization’s senior leadership — could also be connected with preparations for possible civil unrest. In late September 2005, the Basij staged a series of urban defense exercises across the country. General Mirahmadi, the first deputy commander of the Basij, announced in Tehran that the creation of 2,000 Ashura battalions within the Basij will enhance Iran’s defensive capabilities. Ashura units have riot-control responsibilities.

{excerpt from above site – there’s much more on this page of interest}

***

Originally consisting of those males “either too crippled or old for regular military service,”[2] the Basij are perhaps most famous for providing the volunteers that made up the human wave attacks against the Iraqis during the Iran–Iraq War, particularly around Basra.[1] Currently Basij serve as an auxiliary force engaged in activities such as law enforcement, emergency management, the providing of social service, organizing of public religious ceremonies, and more controversially morals policing and the suppression of dissident gatherings.[3][4] They have a local organization in almost every city in Iran.[5]

The Basij are subordinate to, and receive their orders from, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

[ . . . ]

At least originally the Basij was open to those below the age of 18 and above the age of 45, and all women. The militia were an important factor during the Iran–Iraq War (1980-1988). In that war, huge numbers of teen-age Basijis were sacrificed on the minefields, believing that they were holy martyrs and chanting songs about the Battle of Karbala, in which the Imam Hussein, the greatest Shi’ite martyr, was tortured and killed. By the spring of 1983 the Basij had trained 2.4 million Iranians in the use of arms and sent 450,000 to the front.[6] After the war, the Basij was reorganized and gradually developed into one of the Islamic regime’s “primary guarantors of domestic security.” [7]

Organization

The Basij has a quasi-decentralised network with branches in almost every Iranian mosque.[8] Subgroupings of the Basij include the University Basij, Student Basij, and the former tribal levies incorporated into the Basij (aka Tribal Basij). In the Student Basij, Middle-school-aged members are called Seekers (Puyandegan), and high-school members are called the Vanguard (Pishgaman).[9]

The current commander of the Basij is Hasan Taeb.[7] The first deputy commander General Mirahmadi was formally installed on 4 September 2005. The Tehran commander is Seyyed Mohammad Haj Aqamir. The deputy Basij commander for Tehran, General Ahmad Zolqadr, was formally installed on 5 September 2005; the new Basij commander in Tabriz, Brigadier General Mohammad Yusef Shakeri, on 29 September 2005. [9]

According to Radio Free Europe, the “backbone” of the Basij comprises 2,500 Al-Zahra battalions (all women) and Ashura battalions (male), numbering 300–350 personnel each. The IRGC aims to arm 30 percent of these battalions with semi-heavy and heavy weapons. However, all members of the battalions are trained to use light arms and rifles. [7] In addition, since 2007 the Basij have established “30,000 new combat cells, each of them 15-20 members strong, named Karbala and Zolfaqar”. The cells “cooperate closely” or in emergency situations are “controlled by” the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (Also known as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC). [7] [10]

Quds Force

The Ghods Force (Persian: نیروی قدس, translit. Niru-ye Ghods), (or Qods Force) is a special unit of Iran‘s Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution. The Federation of American Scientists, in a document from 1998, says the primary mission of the Ghods Force is to organize, train, equip, and finance foreign Islamic revolutionary movements. It further states that the Ghods Force maintains and builds contacts with underground Islamic militant organizations throughout the Islamic world.[1]

The Ghods Force reports directly to the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.[2][3] Its current commander is Brigadier General Qassem Suleimani.[4]

[ . . . ]

Focus of the Force

The Quds force has three main areas of interest:

  1. Hezbollah operations in Lebanon
  2. Iraqi Kurdistan
  3. Kashmir, the Balouch and Afghanistan

In the past the Quds force has also supported the establishment of Hezbollah branches in Jordan and Palestine.

Size

The size of Quds Force is unknown, with some experts believing that Quds Force numbers no more than 2,000 people, with 800 core operatives, and others saying that it could number anywhere from 3,000 to 50,000.[11][12][13]

Independence and talent

While it reports directly to the Supreme Leader of Iran, there are debates over how independently Quds Force operates.[11]

Mahan Abedin, director of research at the London-based Center for the Study of Terrorism (and editor of Islamism Digest journal), believes the unit is not independent at all: “Quds Force, although it’s a highly specialized department, it is subject to strict, iron-clad military discipline. It’s completely controlled by the military hierarchy of the IRGC, and the IRGC is very tightly controlled by the highest levels of the administration in Iran.”[14]

Who’s Behind Iran’s Death Squad?
Iran’s Secret Agents Answer to a Higher Power
Feb. 14, 2007

The Quds force, meaning Jerusalem force, is, in effect, a group of secret agents and hit men who answer only to the religious authority of the Iranian government.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards

What U.S. officials do know, and have known for years, is that the Quds force is under the control of the country’s Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, not Iran’s president.

“Quds force reports directly to the Supreme Ayatollah, through the commander-in-chief of the revolutionary guards,” Richard Clarke, a former U.S. counterterrorism official and now ABC News consultant, explained. “So it is possible that the ministers in the Iranian government don’t know what the Quds force is doing.”

The U.S. says it has conclusive evidence that the Quds force is moving lethal roadside bombs into Iraq that killed at least 170 U.S. troops.

And U.S. officials say Quds force members have been taken into custody in Iraq, suspected of funding and training Shiite militias.

“They are the trained killers; they are the special forces,” Clarke told ABC News.

***

My Note -

Apparently the government of Iran doesn’t believe they need a middle class in that country . . .

But U.S. officials say there’s no doubt that the Quds force has long had American blood on its hands, linking them to the 1983 attacks in Beirut on the U.S. embassy and marine barracks, as well as the bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, and a series of assassinations of Iranian dissidents in Europe.

“The cream of the fundamentalist crop are the people who really get recruited into the Quds Force,” Roya Hakakian of the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University explained.

Iran kills the voices that disagree with it – the US and UK didn’t cook that up – Ahmadinejad did that by election fraud and oppression of Iran’s people

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2009-06-21-iran-journalists_N.htm?csp=34

PARIS (AP) — Iranian authorities have arrested at least 24 journalists and bloggers since postelection protests began a week ago, and a media watchdog says reporters are a “priority target” for Iran’s leadership.

Among those detained were the head of the Association of Iranian Journalists and a Canadian reporter for Newsweek. The British Broadcasting Corporation’s correspondent has been ordered to leave the country.

[etc.]

Others detained include a blogger known as the “Blogging Mullah,” a cartoonist, a TV producer, the publisher of several newspapers, a disabled former newspaper editor and a business reporter.

[ . . . ]

Hervieu said blogs, Twitter, YouTube and other Internet methods are the only way most people can convey information from the street. But the use of anonymity by blog posters trying to avoid repercussions makes information difficult to verify.

Many of those posting “are both spectators and activists,” blurring lines of impartiality, he said.

He said small digital cameras passed from activist to activist and then to a foreign colleague or news organization are helping spread images, though their provenance is not always clear.

My Note -

There was a story on CNN about the 7 year old who was beaten by police during the Iran protests. The mother screamed in grief. That is the answer of Khamenei who is no more than a political appointee and his puppet, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, both of whom serve no one but himself and their ties to Iran’s military power structure, while undermining Iran on the world stage and making evident the dictatorship that actually exists.

Iran distorts democratic process into foul dictatorship rule by military and oppression – Iran election protests and current continuing intense military build-up

Islamic Revolution

Rafsanjani, one of the main organizers of the Islamic Revolution, was the most powerful official in Iran at the time of Khomeini’s 1989 death. He remained so for at least four years as Khamenei, who was named to replace Khomeini, built up a power base among the security agencies and the Revolutionary Guards.

Rafsanjani, 75, who heads the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body which has the power to appoint or dismiss the supreme leader, is likely to try dislodge Khamenei, 69, said Anoush Ehteshami, a professor of international relations at Durham University in the U.K.

“Rafsanjani is being forced to come out into the open,” said Ehteshami. “The arrest of his family members is a direct challenge to him.”

Rafsanjani’s Family

The Rafsanjani family members, including his daughter, Faezeh Hashemi, were detained late June 19 in connection with the protests, the state-run Fars news agency said.

[etc.]

While the British Broadcasting Corp.’s Persian service reported that family members were released late last night, Iran’s state-run Press TV says Rafsanjani’s daughter, seen on state television addressing demonstrators at a protest, remains in custody. Rafsanjani is a behind-the-scenes supporter of Mousavi.

Split Deepens Within Iran Regime as Rafsanjani Family Targeted

June 22 (Bloomberg) — Splits within Iran’s ruling elite deepened, with police arresting family members of an ex- president and a former nuclear negotiator saying most Iranians questioned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s electoral victory.

Security forces detained five relatives of former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the most influential politicians in the country, state media said yesterday.

Iran’s Air Force starts maneuvers Monday
Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN – Iran will carry out an air maneuver today to strengthen the operational might of the air force.

The air exercise that is called “”Milad-e-Noure-Velayat”" aims at increasing the logistical power and jet fighters’ capability.

Fueling and refueling operations will also be carried out during the air show.

The fighters will fly at low altitude at a distance of 700 km over the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. They will test new ammunition that was produced by the Air Force.

The reconnaissance and surveillance aircrafts will also be used during the war game.

This maneuver is to promote the efficiency of the Air Force personnel in loading the ammunition into the fighters.

The Air Force also carried out a war game named ‘Ra’ad 2′ over the Persian Gulf waters and the Sea of Oman earlier this year in which the war planes flew distances of approximately 2000 kilometers.

The Army carries out war games on a regular basis in order to enhance coordination among its different forces and to test the newly developed military weapons produced by the country as well

Chicago killings and shootings – gang violence – the solution that could work to change the danger they are causing and protect American lives and communities from the gangs that are terrorizing American lives across the United States

Chicago – gang killings – shootings of children by gangs – American Life -

In the last three months, two stabbings and a shooting, all gang-related, took place within two blocks of the house. Last weekend, a woman was killed in what police say was a domestic dispute less than three blocks away.

[ . . . ]

Since last November, there have been 12 violent crimes – five of them since May 5 – in Hanover Park, and residents are on edge.

Yet despite the fear, residents offer myriad suggestions about how to stem the violence and keep their families safe, from a teen’s recommendation that gang prevention programs start in middle school, to a woman’s rule that if you’re a teen you just don’t go out at night, period.

Most said that “tough love” and making family come first are the best, and possibly only, lines of defense against the plague of gangs.

Gun control hasn’t stopped Chicago shooting deaths

June 1, 8:29 AM

And here are a few other things that haven’t worked:

The federal ban on firearm possession by “prohibited persons.”

The Illinois requirement for a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card.

The Illinois prohibition on concealed carry.

Chicago’s ban on handgun ownership.

So-called “gun control” has utterly failed at declawing the predators. The only thing it has done is ensure them a disarmed and defenseless victim pool. And any “strategy” that fails to recognize this essential truth will only guarantee that it will be a long, hot summer.

***
(and also from this same article – )

Violence in Chicago is beyond any pretense of control by the authorities. NPR sums up the symptoms:

Young people in Chicago are dying violent deaths at an alarming rate.

So far this school year, at least 36 Chicago Public School students have been killed, most of them victims of gunshots. Scores of other Chicago children and teenagers have been wounded in shootings, and there are concerns that the gun violence could escalate when school is out for the summer in a few weeks.

This past weekend was no exception:

Stansbury was among seven people slain in several shootings Saturday night and Sunday in Chicago. No one was charged in any of the slayings.

[etc.]

Back to the NPR story:

Gun violence is so pervasive in Chicago because of the sheer number of gang members, according to Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis.

“We have the largest gang population of any city in the United States,” Weis says. “The only city that rivals us is Los Angeles.”

Weis says that while L.A.’s gang population is estimated to be somewhere between 55,000 and 70,000, he estimates there are at least 100,000 gang members in Chicago.

CeaseFire, which treats violence like a preventable disease, operates in Waukegan and North Chicago. It was founded in Chicago in 1999 by epidemiologist Dr. Gary Slutkin, who battled infectious diseases including AIDS in Africa.

Families of two of the latest victims — Jonathan Quebrado, 15, of North Chicago and Spencer Buckle, 17, of Zion — were there. Quebrado was shot to death in March at Woodward Park in North Chicago. Buckle, who belonged to the gang that did the shooting, was executed by one of his own in April.

“We want people to stop killing,” said Thalia Castillo, 9, Quebrado’s sister.

[ . . . ]

CeaseFire outreach worker Alan Gates wore the face of his son, a toddler with a sparkling smile. Terreal Gates was 15 when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Park City in 2004.

“I’ve been a victim of the violence in the street, and I’ve been a contributor to the violence in the street,” said Gates, 45, of North Chicago. “It’s insanity. But for those of us who live in the trenches, it’s a way of life.”

As one of 24 CeaseFire workers, many who have felony convictions, Gates said he wants to “turn the light on in somebody’s mind.”

“We need to touch people in a hands-on way,” he said.

The above chart shows the nationalities of civilian contractors reported injured or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The above chart shows the nationalities of civilian contractors reported injured or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

KBR Inc. is the largest employer of contract workers in Iraq, with about 16,000, most of them U.S. citizens, according to a July 2007 Pentagon census.

The Houston engineering and construction firm reported more than 700 serious injuries or deaths in the first six months of 2007 — almost five incidents for every 100 workers.

Prime Projects International of Dubai was the largest employer of foreigners in Iraq, with about 10,000 civilian workers.

The company reported 43 serious injuries or deaths in the first six months of 2007 — less than one per 100 workers.

The same held for other subcontractors with large foreign workforces, such as Saudi-based Gulf Catering Co. and Tamimi Global Co. and Turkish firm Kulak. None of the companies responded to requests for comment.

[ . . . ]

Insurance for civilians working in war zones is required under a World War II-era law known as the Defense Base Act [4]. Companies providing services to the U.S. government must secure a special type of workers’ compensation coverage for their employees, both American and foreign.

The insurance covers all injuries and deaths, whether caused by workplace accidents or roadside bombs. Companies bill the cost to U.S. taxpayers as part of their government contracts.

For decades, this system was overseen by a handful of federal bureaucrats who processed a few hundred claims a year. That changed when the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan in 2001 and later in Iraq.

In both conflicts, the U.S. military has relied on civilian workers to a greater extent than ever before — to cook meals, clean latrines, deliver fuel and translate for troops, among many other tasks. There are more civilians than uniformed soldiers in the two war zones, and more than 1,400 contract workers have died [5].

Breaking:

Rumours and so far unconfirmed reports say that Hassan Dahir Aweys, the leader of the Somali insurgents, has been wounded, while Hassan Turki, a leader of the al-Shabaab would have been killed in intense fighting near Wabho in central Somalia, which saw 120 fighters dead. Other sources speak of false propaganda, while a spokesman of Hizbul Islam from Addis Ababa confirmed that Hassan Dahir Aweys had been slightly wounded. Sources from the TFG speak of a serious wounding of Hassan Dahir Aweys at his back, while he himself talks only of a few scratches. Hassan Turki, however, who had escaped even air-strikes by the US earlier, is reported to not even have been in the area where the fighting erupted yesterday, while Shabaab leader Gudanne was reportedly killed.

My Note -

So why not send those gangs and gang members who have nothing else to offer except killing children, robbing, shooting and making life dangerous for everyone – to fight the same guerrilla jackasses in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq or wherever the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are making life unbearable.

Then, the gangs and those convicted of killings from Chicago can use their skills to do what they are obviously good at doing which is guerrilla fighting, following orders of the very hierarchal and bureaucratic authority provided in gang membership, killing, planning and following through on the plans for ambushing, robbing, thieving, killing, raping, pillaging and plundering America.

The only difference would be the target of their skills and the location which could be provided by judges and community choices to send those Chicago and Los Angeles gangs to Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan with photos of their targets. We might not even have to provide them with a gun since they seem to be able to acquire them damn near anywhere along with ammunition even where gun control laws make it prohibited and difficult.

Given that these human beings that have claimed gang membership are going to keep killing precious lives that are worthwhile, destroying neighborhoods, and making life treacherous for everyone, why not send them where their skills and devotion to bureaucratic leadership would do some good?

There is no use wasting the “best of the best” in these fights with the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and any extremists intent on carrying out terrorist acts – might as well send the Chicago gang members that have already killed somebody or are trying to endanger the community with criminal acts, violence and gang activities.

That would solve the gang violence problems – once these individuals realized that to continue violent and criminal behaviors / gang involvement would mean being rewarded with a trip to fight in Somalia against an extreme environment and extremely violent terrorists or pirates on the high seas – or in Afghanistan’s extremely harsh and violent territory with its guerrilla Taliban fighters – maybe these gang members would change their minds.

But, if not – then these gang members and murdering gangs could be put where their skill sets are appropriate, justified and necessary. They can always be sent to Iraq as civilian contractors – the life expectancy their lifestyle offers in Chicago or Los Angeles gangs isn’t any better and their skill sets are misplaced and misguided as they are using them in those and other cities of America.

These gang members obviously know how to use a gun and shoot somebody. They can apparently plan a mission and carry it out or they wouldn’t be able to rob an armored car or a person coming home from work with a paycheck. These individuals gang members carry out the orders of their gang leadership and are willing to move like a group of pack animals, so obviously they can follow orders, take orders and give orders, as well as operating as a unit in a coordinated way. They are perfect for military applications against guerrillas, extremists, terrorists and extreme environments of violence and harsh conditions.

“Night Sea” – Ocean waves painting of the sea at night. This ocean waves art card was created in acrylic paint and then scanned and photographed to put it into the computer. Filters from several computer software programs were added to change the overall look from the acrylic ocean painting style to watercolor effects.

A painting can be created using watercolor that would convey this look by using flowing open white areas and translucent washed ochre in small touches which are then removed – these washes must be very light to prevent the ochre pigment from fixing to the paper and destroying the overall flow of the night sea image.

The placement of successive washes in ultramarine, prussian blue, and small touches of cobalt fill out the picture plane. Each wash becomes successively darker and deeper with mars black or payne’s grey added toward the end of the process. It is possible to protect some areas with frisket but that isn’t necessary if the work is staged to dry between the addition of the very darkest elements.

The depth of the ocean’s night sky over the sea waves can be achieved by a mix a black and prussian blue with a depth of hue not usually reserved for watercolor paintings. Touches of this blue-black mix can be coordinated in the picture by underlaying some shadow areas beneath the waves and especially in the foreground to detail the flowing, fluid essence of the ocean which will bring these elements into enhanced focus.

Although I didn’t create this painting in watercolor originally but rather in acrylic paints, the effects can be generated in layers of watercolors to re-create the emotion, the essence and the elements of the ocean waves in the night sea.

Night Living in the Georgia Summertime – The Night Owl Cafe

The Night Owl Cafe -

Here in Georgia, the nights are slow and long. Crickets and cicadas sing in the trees until early in the morning deep into the darkness of the night when the birds start calling through the trees. There are few cars and it is easy to pretend that the city is far away even though it is all around me. In the quiet stillness, especially during the summertime when the heat hangs like a glove on every movement of the day, it is easier to live at night in its cool gentle breezes listening to the night songs of the crickets.
