My Note -
This completely devastated area does not represent a “Green Earthquake Alert” in Italy – they [at GDACS] got it wrong, although it is probably correct that landslides could also be a problem. Water, power lines and gas lines are compromised, obviously – and I read that somewhere this morning, and in one photograph from the area, an entire section of earth dropped into nowhere under buildings and a large portion of roadway and bridge were buckled, but I don’t remember where I found the photos.
Also -
from my research about the quake – some of the best places to find out about it – The death toll is now over 100, and there are tents being set up for people.
***
I haven’t found any pictures from North and Northeast of L’Aquila, but I’m sure they are somewhere. In fact, I hate to say it but there doesn’t seem to be any news coming from any of the small villages and townships up through there. All of the stories and pictures I could find involve the Southern, Southeastern and Southwestern towns where there has apparently been a lot of damage and some deaths.
By using the Google news search with “earthquake Italy” as the search terms, there were a lot of photos and stories, but it looks like some of the best and most current are coming from ANSA News Agency. It has an English version or from Repubblica Italia. I don’t know if it is in English or not. Also, some of the best reporting on Javno.com and http://news.xinhuanet.com/english – also – Telegraph UK and BBC – but this one had the best group of easily viewed pictures, although they came from Reuters, I think – http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Strong-earthquake-hits-central-Italy/ss/events/wl/040609italyquake/im:/090406/481/280f9a39eb714cf393f3db5316673ef0/#photoViewer=/090406/481/52d3367c9a9349d7af39f5f5d6749d01

I looked that up and also Collebrincioni – they had to have had damage, but so far there isn’t news coming out from there unless it is in the blogs or IReports on CNN or something. It might be worth calling them. The police cameras had a helicopter aerial photo earlier that was taken over the town of L’Aquila and I was hoping they’ve been up through those other areas from the air but I haven’t seen anything yet about anywhere North or Northeast of L’Aquila. I’m horrified that many of the damaged structures were newer buildings and the concrete looked brittle and crumbly in the pictures. That shouldn’t be that way. The areas around the physics lab – I don’t know but I hope the emergency groups have moved out in that direction.

Quake: 1, 500 injured, premier says
Tents for 20, 000 people set up amid fears of further quakes
(ANSA) – L’Aquila, April 6 – Premier Silvio Berlusconi said Monday that around 1,500 people were injured in the L’Aquila earthquake that killed at least 92.
”At the moment 4,000 rescuers are at work and concentrating on extracting people from the rubble,” said Berlusconi, who cancelled a trip to Moscow to travel to L’Aquila where he surveyed the damage from a helicopter.
The premier said a camp with 2,000 tents, each capable of housing 8-10 people, was currently being set up in the city for those who had lost their homes in the disaster, while around 4,000 beds in hotels in the area had also been reserved for survivors.
”The camp should be ready be tonight,” Berlusconi told journalists at a press conference, during which another small quake was felt.
”The fundamental thing I want to say is that nobody will be left alone,” he said.
The premier appealed to survivors not to remain in damaged houses.
”Nobody can tell if there will be further quakes in the next few hours or days,” he said.

11.11 EDT am – on CNN (34) on scene report which stated that the new buildings that collapsed shouldn’t have collapsed and were not up to code (that will have to be looked into.)
My note – it shouldn’t have happened. Those buildings shouldn’t have been built that way.
See notes – handwritten.

Earthquake Event
Earthquake Impact Details
Potentially affected PeopleThe population in the area of this earthquake if 64 people/km². (Data source). The earthquake occurred at 2h local time. At this time a day, more people are at home and therefore more vulnerable to collapsing residential buildings. During traffic hours, people can be affected by collapsing bridges and other road infrastructure.
DamageThe affected region has low level of urban area (0.2%) and a high level of cultivated area (34.8%). In urban areas more damage can be expected than in cultivated or natural areas. (Data source)
Resilience and VulnerabilityResilience is the capacity of the population to cope with a hazard. Since much of investments in earthquake preparedness and available funds for quick response is related to household income, the GDP per capita can be used as a rough indicator of resilience. Italy has a GDP per capita of 20174 PPP$ (Parity Purchasing Power Dollar, about 1 Euro) and is therefore part of the high level income countries. Therefore, the earthquake happened in an area of high resilience. Based on the combination of 9 indicators, ECHO attributes Italy a low vulnerability. ExposureBoth conditions for survival and conditions for delivering aid strongly depend on the current weather and temperature. The following graphs show the current and forecast weather. Current weather conditions and forecasts at earthquake location (lat: 42.4228 – long: 13.3945) (Data source).
More detailed observations at closest weather station (Liberi): WeatherByWeb – NOAA Probability of Secondary effects
Critical infrastructureThe following critical infrastructure is nearby and could be affected by the earthquake:
The distance to nuclear installations is evaluated based on a 1999 UN dataset containing the location of nuclear plants in the world. If plants are near and the earthquake magnitude is above 6.5, the alert is set to orange. Note that the location of plants is approximate with errors of up to 100km. Getting there and awayThe nearest civilian airport (Liberi) is at 65km from the epicenter. The Civil airfield of L Aquila Preturo is located at 8km from the epicenter. I’m tryin to see some picture of earth quake of poggio picenze i was born there 1940 tryin to remember my old house and some frends domenico, alberto vincenzo micone and my aunt angelina ferrari and my 3 cousens mariapia lica e suo marito antonio
I put what i could find on a post just now.
With this title –

Please let me know How I can find out if my friend is OK
I just posted the information that I could find –
http://cricketdiane.wordpress.com/2009/04/13/earthquake-laquila-italy-and-abruzzo-where-to-find-out-about-loved-ones-family-and-friends/” rel=”nofollow
Also –
http://italianpropertyconsultant.co.uk/2009/04/06/earthquake-aquilla-abruzzo-rome-italy/” rel=”nofollow
The blog above was posting interactions between people that were trying to find family members and friends during the first few days – there are bits of information about damage in areas surrounding L’Aquila, but it is not the newest information –
The University at L’Aquila should also have information about the students and professors there and how they are doing.
http://www.univaq.it/” rel=”nofollow
I hope this helps – the post I had just made, has the phone numbers to call for information about people there and apparently some cell phones are getting through.
There are some groups in the US that are raising money to send who also might have information about people there.
